MI AZAROSA VIDA Karl Dönitz no sòlo fue el comandante genial del arma submarina durante la segunda guerra mundial, su vida desde su ingreso en la Marina Imperial en 1910 estuvo plagada de eventos destacables, por lo que no podía faltar a la bibliografía bélica la narración del "Gran Almirante" sobre su vida de soldado. Dónitz participó en la Primera Guerra Mundial como miembro de la tripulación del crucero Breslau hasta que fue transferido a la fuerza submarina para servir en tres unidades distintas: U-39, UC-25 y UB-68. Luego de realizar 8 patrullas a bordo de éstos, es capturado debido al naufragio del UB-68 en Octubre de 1918 y permanece en un campo de prisioneros británico hasta 1920. Pasa luego a formar parte de la Reichswehr, siendo nombrado Teniente en 1921, Teniente Comandante en 1928 y Comandante en 1933. Al año siguiente se le comisiona como comandante del crucero Emden, en el cual realiza un crucero de instrucción de un año, encargado de la formación de los nuevos oficiales de la Armada. El 1 de septiembre de 1935 es ascendido al grado de Capitán de la reconstituida Kriegsmarine de la Alemania Nazi. Si bien al periodo que abarca la SGM sólo le dedica dos capítulos, ya que lo aqui acontecido aparece en su conocido libro "Diez Años y Veinte Días", el relato de lo actuado en el segundo gran conflicto bélico, más lo que le tocó sufrir en Nüremberg, no deja de resultar de gran interés. Dado la posición de privilegio del autor y la calidad de su narración, sin duda tenemos aquí un libro de enorme valía para los interesados en la guerra en el mar.
