Juli 1953 als erster Mensch den Gipfel des 8125 m hohen Nanga Parbat (als Mitglied der von K.M. Herrligkoffer geleiteten Deutschen Himalaya-Expedition 1953). Bereits 1895 versuchte der britische Alpinist A.F. Mummery über die Diamirflanke den Gipfel zu erreichen, die deutschen Expeditionen von 1932, 1934, 1937 und 1938 versuchten vergeblich eine Besteigung, scheiterten jedoch tragisch. Insgesamt starben 14 europäische und 17 einheimische Bergsteiger beim Versuch einer Erstbesteigung des Nanga Parbat.

Wolfgang Theurer. (zur Expedition: Sehr kurzfristig bekommt Herrligkoffer für 1968 die Erlaubnis einer Nanga Parbat-Expedition . Am 26. Mai war die Mannschaft in Karachi und am 7. Juni war man bereits auf der Hochweide Tap. Noch am selben Tag stiegen Scholz und Schloz in die Wand ein und begannen mit der Versicherung des Wieland-Kessels. Lager I stand wenige Tage später auf dem Platz von 1964 . Mitte Juni war die Wieland-Eiswand durchstiegen und der Lastenaufzug, der den Transport der Lasten zwischen Lager 2 und Lager 3 erleichtern sollte, wurde errichtet. Schlechtwetter erlaubte es bis Ende Juni nicht, den Aufstieg wesentlich in die Höhe voran zu treiben. Erst am 1. Juli steigen Schnaidt, Rosenzopf und Theurer wieder zu Lager 1 hinauf. Am 8. Juli erreicht Golikow Lager 4 (6600 m), in dem bereits Wilhelm Schloz und Peter Scholz genächtigt haben. Am Abend des 9. Juli brechen die drei Richtung Merkl-Rinne auf. Golikow muss diesen Aufstieg entkräftet aufgeben, während Schloz und Scholz etwa 7100 Meter erreichen und dort zu einem eisigen Biwak gezwungen sind. Erst am nächsten Morgen steigen sie zu Lager 4 ab. Ein Unfall verhindert jeden weiteren Aufstiegsplan: Günter Strobel zieht sich beim Aufstieg von Lager 2 zu Lager 3 bei einem Sprung über eine Spalte einen komplizierten Unterschenkelbruch zu und muss aufwändig abtransportiert werden. Die Expedition ist damit beendet, die Rupalflanke aber immerhin bis auf über 7000 Meter erkundet - wichtige Vorarbeit für die Rupal-Expedition 1970 .).
