Seller: Frank J. Raucci, Bookseller, Wallingford, CT, U.S.A.
Cloth Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1940 First Edition, 3rd printing of 1938 original. A book of poetry by a white poet with an African-American experience theme. Former owner's inked name on front endpaper. No dustjacket. Mild sunning to spine, elsewise a bright, clean, tight copy with all text clear/unmarked. From the Foreword: "Kate McAlpin Crady understands and knows Negroes as well as any person can understand and know another race than her own. She was "raised" on a Mississippi plantation with colored children as happy playmates, and with a wise old mammy who taught her to mind her manners.".and, further on."Mrs Grady knows also what became of those younger Negroes with whom she played. How they suddenly grew to sprindle-legged adolescence and were drawn into the strange emotional ways of their own race. How they got religion and made love and tended babies and toiled for the little share of life that a plantation Negro can attain. In her heart she loves the - black gals and yaller, drownded chillun, and rowdy stevedores. That is why she has written these poems about them with so much tenderness and honesty that it is almost as if the voiceless Negroes of the South themselves had spoken in her lines." 65 poems. Red cloth boards with gold gilt lettering on the front cover. 83 pages. GFC12.
Hardcover. [iv] 83p., sixth printing, maroon cloth boards with gilt titling; illustrations cloth spine is a bit toned, no dust jacket, residual bookplate on pastedown endpaper, else very good. Bad southern Negro dialect poetry. The quote on the rear cover jacket (not present) makes me reconsider J. Frank Dobie's humanity; "She knows what's in a niggerhead from de mouf up." The illustrations though technically well-done are just as infuriating.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Dust jacket in very good condition. Sixth printing. Minor shelf and handling wear, overall a clean solid copy with minimal signs of use. Secure packaging for safe delivery. 1.
