Hardcover. Condition: Very good plus. [864pp, 2 guarded plate leaves, t.e.g.]: VOL I [452pp, guarded frontis]: vi, 446; VOL II [412pp, guarded frontis]: [iv], 408 (last leaf ads); separately bound in uniform gilt evergreen cloth; 196 x 134 x 67 mm (aggregate). A reprint of the US edition (originally issued 1883). Ex libris, Scots-Canadian author & editor, Katharine Leslie Lawson Appleby (1864-1944), with her ink signature in both volumes (dated 1903). 'Woman's World' editor at the upstart Toronto World (under the byline Katharine Leslie), she followed the example of her indomitable mother, Jessie Kerr Coupar Lawson (1838-1917), who had to support her husband William Lawson (1830-1910) & family of ten, with her journalism, humour (1888), 8 novels (1892-1908) & a volume of poetry (1913), after he was disabled at work in 1873. As a result, according to the biography of her distinguished elder brother, Andrew Cowper Lawson (1861-1952), Katharine & he were responsible for taking "over many of the tasks and responsibilities that would normally have been assumed by their parents". Following his graduation from the University of Toronto (1885: MA) & Doctorate at Johns Hopkins (1888), Andrew went on to 'rock stardom' as Professor of Geology at UCAL Berkeley (1892-1952), the man who would first identify the San Andreas Fault (1895), & be called upon to produce the so-called Lawson Report following the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 (The Report of the State Earthquake Investigation Commission, 1908). Katharine has tipped several portraits of Carlyle & his wife into both volumes, together with two contemporary clippings in Volume One. Although she left no annotations, one passage dealing with marriage has been marked in the margin of Letter 27 (to Susan Hunter, Mrs Stirling): "I rejoice to see that marriage has not spoiled you. This speaks well for your husband too; for I defy any woman, unless she be no better than a stone, to hinder herself from taking something of the colour of the man she lives beside all days of the year. We women are naturally so impressible, so imitative! the more shame to men if we have all the failings they charge us with! Our very self-will, I believe, which they make such a fuss about, is, after all, only a reflex of their own [pp94/5]!" Wife of chemist, Wesley G. Appleby, Katharine received the present volumes as a gift from him, according to her note. Appropriate, considering the independent spirit of the Carlyles & the resourcefulness of the dauntless Lawson brood, all of whom went on to commendable distinction. A nice set (slightly cocked), with minor split to cloth at head of spine in Volume One.
