New York, Privately Published, large octavo, iii, [i], 100 p., with a frontispiece portrait of the General. ***CONTENT: Philip Kearny, Jr. (1815-1862) was a dynamic, much celebrated officer in the United States Army, notable for his courage and leadership during the Mexican-America War, in western Indian conflicts, and for the Union in the Civil War. In the 1840s, he served under Napoleon III in Algeria, and was the first U.S. citizen awarded the French Légion d'Honneur decoration. In 1862, he was killed in action at the Battle of Chantilly, Virginia. He remains New Jersey's most famous soldier. Chapters in this volume include: "Service with the French troops in Africa", dated 1844, from his diary; "Philip Kearny: a biographical sketch", by Maj. Gen. John Watts De Peyster; "Kearny at Seven Pines: a poem", by E.C. Stedman; "A dashing dragoon", by Captain Mayne Reid, and examples of Kearny's Civil War correspondence. ***CONDITION: This is a complete, VG copy bound in the original blue cloth with "Kearny in Africa" in gilt on the spine. The covers are mildly worn at the spine ends; spine lettering distinct. Top edge gilt. Joints and hinges solid, binding firm. Inked 1889 presentation inscription and 1893 ownership stamp on the preliminaries. A sound copy of an informative, historical work. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
