Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 307 pages.1968 - First Edition - 3rd Printing. Inscribed and signed on front endpaper " To ---------- With my very best regards, Thomas S. Dickey Jan 11, 1977." Approx 8 1/2" by 11 1/4". Red cloth hardcover with slightly dulled gilt title on cover and spine along with vignette of the rounded top of a shell on cover. Covers have very light wear. On the Table of Contents page there is approx. 3" area from near the bottom of gutter's edge that is roughen & has 2 small spots of paper loss. Otherwise, book is in very good condition. Text is clean and tight with many photographs and illustrations of projectiles and fuses along with detailed description including: provenance, pattern, diameter, length, gun, type, system, fusing, & remarks which gives further information. Also, there is an index in the back of the book which is quite handy for quickly finding the page location for a particular shell or fuse. Laid in the book is an interesting one-sided hand written letter (approx. 8 1/2"x 11") with envelope from the author, Thomas S. Dickey dated, 2/2/82. Both letterhead/envelope have an artillery themed illustration containing a chest, projectiles and a Confederate flag and the envelope also has a camp site illus. with cannon. Included is a second envelope with the same artillery motif. The letter explains how he became interested in Civil War projectiles. Specifically, Dickey began as a track star at L.S.U. and apparently trained after college in track and field but "looked around for something (else) to do" as there was not much of a monetary future back then for professional track stars. Dickey had a friend who was into Civil War memorabilia and he became interested in Civil War artillery shells from searching battlefields. Since there was very little written about the subject, Dickey set to writing a book about projectiles. Also enclosed with the letter is a 5" by 3 1/4" original photo dated, Jan. 1982 of Dickey's Relic Room in his Atlanta home which contains a huge collection of shells and other artillery paraphernalia - all neatly organized and displayed. A nice copy of one of the most thorough and important works on the subject of Civil War projectiles that also includes a unique personal group of items from the author. Signed by Author(s).
