Soft cover. Condition: Good. 64 pages. 8.75" x 11.75". The range and variety of weaponry in the years 1939 to 1945 is staggering in both its scale and its ingenuity. From the heavy-bladed kukris of the Gurkhas, to the enormous multi-axle Germany railway guns firing two rounds and hour, the pressures of technology and different theatres of operation produced weapons in all classes that bore only basic resemblance to their counterparts of 1914-1918. The later years of the war saw too the emergence of sophisticated rocketry, the guided missile, and finally, the atom bomb. The book pictures and identifies weapons from the armouries of Britain, the United States, Japan, Germany and Russia: from the Bren light machine gun, through the classes of heavy machine-guns and artiller, to the 'doodle-bugs and V-2's that were to terrorise Britain's cities. Detailed text. A fascinating study. Former owner's name penned on the inside of the back cover. The Book show use. The binding is tight and the inside is clean. Overall a Good copy. First Edition
Wraps. Condition: Good. John Batchelor (illustrator). 64 pages. Illustrations (some with color). This series of special publications presents full accounts of all aspects of the war. This book traces the transition from spotter to fighter and in pictures, color artwork and eye witness accounts describes the victims and the vanquished in the first air war of our time. Balloons had been used for artillery observation during the Franco-Prussian was and subsequent European conflicts, but when the first heavier than air craft took off from the ground some men could foresee military applications for their machines. By 1914, however, there were enthusiastic advocates the the aeroplane as a spotter and scout. In the race for technological superiority the generals were forced to accept aircraft as weapons of war. Warring aviators took rifles and pistols with them to try and shoot the enemy. Other pilots through grenades or darts at enemy ground forces. These actions were the origins of the fighter and the bomber aircraft, aerial combat tactics, and a strategic air arm. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.
