Deshalb ist am Anfang dieses Buches nicht von der notorischen Zeitnot die Rede, nicht von Stress und Hektik, nicht von der Allerweltsklage "Ich habe keine Zeit". Nein, die Fakten sprechen eine andere Sprache: Wir haben mehr Zeit, als wir denken. Eine erstaunliche Beobachtung, die aber offenbar niemand so richtig im Bewusstsein hat. Das beginnt bei der Lebenserwartung: Ein Mensch, der heute geboren wird, darf damit rechnen, über 100 Jahre alt zu werden! Momentan liegt die Lebenserwartung für Männer bei rund 74 Jahren, für Frauen sogar bei 80 Jahren. Davon konnte man in früheren Jahrhunderten nur träumen. Im Mittelalter war jemand jenseits der 40 bereits ein alter Mensch. Mangelernährung, Seuchen und Unfälle rafften die Menschen schon früh dahin. Der Begriff Midlife-Crisis konnte sich erst im 20. Jahrhundert durchsetzen, weil davor zu wenige Menschen überhaupt so alt wurden, dass sie diese Krise erleben konnten. Arbeiten bis zum Umfallen? Parallel dazu ist die Lebensarbeitszeit dramatisch gesunken. Die Frage "Was planst du für deinen Ruhestand?" hätte noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten auf den Gesichtern Ratlosigkeit erzeugt. Ruhestand - was ist das? Es war die Regel, bis zum Umfallen zu arbeiten, um für sich und seine Nachkommen Brot zu erwerben. Heute folgen im Normalfall auf die Pensionierung 10 bis 20 Jahre, über die man bei materiell ordentlicher Absicherung frei verfügen kann - sofern man einigermaßen gesund ist, was wohl für die große Mehrheit zutrifft. Selbst die sich inzwischen anbahnende Rückkehr zu einer längeren Lebensarbeitszeit ändert an diesem Zuwachs an Freizeit nur wenig - zumal sie, dank des medizinischen Fortschritts, mit einer Verlängerung der Lebenserwartung Hand in Hand geht. Wer heute auf das Zeitbudget seines Lebens blickt und es mit dem Budget früherer Generationen vergleicht, kommt zu dem Ergebnis: Er schwimmt geradezu in einem "Meer an Zeit". Weniger Schlaf, mehr Freizeit Das gilt keineswegs nur für den Ruhestand. Werfen wir einen Blick auf die Wochenarbeitszeit. Sie ist bis zur Jahrhundertwende permanent gesunken. Hätte man Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts während der industriellen Revolution den Fabrikarbeitern von der 37,5-Stunden-Woche erzählt, sie hätten das für eine Geschichte aus dem Vorhof zum Schlaraffenland gehalten. Damals arbeiteten die Frauen und Männer in den Fabriken oft doppelt so lange! Es gab keine Mindestlöhne, Angebot und Nachfrage regelten den Arbeitsmarkt, der Ausbeutung waren keine Grenzen gesetzt.
