Limited to 900 numbered copies of which this is one of 700 printed by hand at the Kotinos Press in Athens, Greece. Issued in conjunction with the 30th Anniversary of Oak Knoll and containing a biographical introduction by its proprietor, Robert Fleck. Konstantinos Staikos has become more than an author to Oak Knoll; he is our Greek friend who represents all that we admire most in this book world of ours. In addition to being a noted architect he has found time to write many significant texts on the history of libraries, form an important book collection, purchase and save a Greek letter-press printing company (which printed this book), establish a noted publishing house and develop a web based information resource for the study of library history. In this essay you will find his view of the development of the library and the impact it has had on mankind. You will read how the book and the knowledge it transmits has affected his life. You will feel his great love of books. You will read all this in a beautifully prepared book printed and bound by hand in the oldest tradition of fine craftsmanship. cloth, deckle edges, paper cover label.

hardcover, dust jacket. 6.75 x 9.5 inches. hardcover, dust jacket. 304 pages. This publication examines the papyrus books collected by Plato himself, a habit which began when he was still 'studying' under Socrates and continued throughout his years of teaching in the Academy. The book deals extensively with the works of the Ionian and Eleatic Natural Philosophers, as well as of the Pythagoreans, which informed the composition of Plato's Dialogues. Furthermore, through this process the fabric of Sophistic literature composed at Athens is unfolded and the pioneers who introduced the study of Mathematics in the Academy are discussed in brief. Finally, a large chapter in the book deals with the architecture of the Academy, including topographical surveys and scale plans which reveal interesting facts about the ideas that went into its design, and the use of its facilities. Available in Europe from Brill.

First Edition
hardcover, dust jacket. 6.75 x 9.5 inches. hardcover, dust jacket. 345 pages. from the 4th BCE to the 16th century. Testimonies of Platonic Tradition is, in a way, a continuation of Konstantinos Staikos' recent publication Books and Ideas: The Library of Plato and the Academy (2013). It deals with questions of transmission and classification of Plato's Dialogues from the philosopher's own age down to the 16th century, that is, with the fate of the Platonic corpus. As the chronicle of this journey unfolds, readers will be able to follow the foundation of philosophical schools whose teaching was based on Platonic theories and concepts, in East and West. They will also obtain an overview of the works of commentary and annotation of Plato's works, composed by Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Latin and Arab authors in order to elucidate the philosopher's thought. This book makes clear the importance of Timaeus from antiquity onwards, as this work became the bible of Platonism ever since Chalcidius paraphrased the dialogue into Latin and offered a classification of its subjects into categories. In addition, mention is made of the translation of Timaeus and Parmenides into Latin by the Greeks Henry Aristippus and George of Trebizond; the publication of the Latin translation of the philosopher's Complete Works by Marsilio Ficino and the part played by the Platonic Academy of Florence in further transmitting the philosophy of Plato. The text also describes how Marcus Musurus prepared his editio princeps of Plato's complete works and finally deals with the historical period when the debate over the primacy of Plato or Aristotle broke out.

hardcover, dust jacket. Aristotle (illustrator). 6.7 x 9.5 inches. hardcover, dust jacket. Approx. 336 pages. The Library of Aristotle follows the adventures of Aristotle's book collection down to the edition of the corpus aristotelicum by Andronicus of Rhodes in the first century CE. Aristotle started to collect books in order to form his personal library even before he became a member of the Academy and a pupil of Plato (367 BCE). The kernel of his collection consisted in the texts of his father Nicomachus and medical treatises which the latter, who was physician to Amyntas III of Macedonia, probably had in his possession. Aristotle's own writings, the exoteric together with the didactic, cover 106 cylinders. In order to comment on the whole of the cultural tradition, he also collected all written texts accessible to him at the time: treatises on physics, philosophy, poetry, rhetoric, theory of government and politics, cosmogony, the diatribes of the sophists and all the works of Plato and the members of the Academy. His knowledge of the written tradition is evident from the numerous citations he uses in his texts and his critical comments on the works of other authors. There are three discernible periods in Aristotle's writing, which correspond to the three stages in his life in which he made major additions to his library: the period of the Academy (c. 367-347), the period of his self-imposed exile to Assus, Lesbos and Macedonia (c. 347 - 335) and the time when he taught at the Lyceum of Athens (c. 335-322). His library, comprised of all these books, came to form part of the Lyceum library, and remained intact until Theophrastus's death. No one before or after Aristotle was able to master such an complex and varied range of material, which covered nearly all branches of knowledge.

Hardcover. 8.25 x 11 inches. Hardcover. 264 pages. The Greek Incunables and Greek Works in Foreign Incunables aims to delineate and present the corpus of Greek books printed until 1501, with a special focus on those works published in the original. This is to our knowledge the first systematic presentation of the Greek books released in the incunabular period. Printing in Greek posed challenges in the early printing era, both because producing reliable editions and translations was a very laborious task and due of the need to design and cut special typeface complete with accents and breathing marks. Tying in with the author's earlier works such as Charta of Greek Printing, the book places the publication of Greek books in Italy and other printing centres in Europe within the context of Renaissance humanism, and the desire to recover the works of Greek and Roman antiquity. The first chapter concisely describes the context of production of those editions in the second half of the 15th century, with emphasis on the place of classical languages in Renaissance education and the crucial work of Byzantine scholar Emmanuel Chrysoloras in Italy. At the same time it discusses the early translations of classical works into Latin by Greek and Italian scholars under the auspices of Pope Nicholas V in the mid-15th century, and emphasizes the link between the demand for printed books, specifically dictionaries and grammars, and humanist education. An overview of the printing shops of Italy is provided, with a focus on the pioneers of typography such as Pannartz, Sweynheim, Ulrich Han and Aldus Manutius, and humanist scholars like Giovanni Andrea de Bussi, cardinal Bessarion and others. There follows a succinct presentation of the technical challenges met with by early printers, the layout of the first bilingual books, and the design of Greek founts. Naturally, several works of Greek literature circulated first in Latin or in other languages. Thus the second part of the work is a list of Greek texts published in translation, either as stand-alone works or as part of incunabular collections on morality, philosophy, poetry etc. The third and main section of the book is a catalogue of the approximately eighty editions which circulated in Greek from c.1469 to 1501, with an entry dedicated to each, describing the contents and the history of that book's creation. This catalogue includes works released independently as well as excerpts of Greek texts (for example, Gorgias of Plato cited in Aulus Gellius's Noctes) and trial sheets such as those produced for the Deipnosophists and Manutius's project of the Polyglot Bible. Lavishly illustrated throughout with pages of those first editions and other material, The Greek Incunables enables readers to visually appreciate the work of the pioneers of typography and come into contact with the world of early printing.

hardcover. 8.5 x 11.5 inches. hardcover. 608 pages. Vol. III From Constantine the Great to Cardinal Bessarion: Imperial, Monastic, School and Private Libraries in the Byzantine World. The third volume of The History of the Library spans a period of more than a thousand years and covers an area stretching from Alexandria and Trebizond to Calabria and Sicily in the south of Italy. The author explores the end of the ancient world and the closure and destruction of its monumental libraries, and describes the formation of the great monastic libraries, such as St. Catherine's on Mount Sinai, the Monastery of Studius in Constantinople, the group of monasteries on Mount Athos and the famous library in the Monastery of St. John on Patmos. Finally, he examines all the known palace, public, university and private libraries in the whole of the Byzantine Empire, and discusses the book trade as well. Among the libraries included in this third volume are those formed in the states that emerged after the fall of Constantinople to the Crusaders in 1204, such as the Empires of Nicaea and Trebizond, the Despotate of Epirus and the Kingdom of Thessalonica. In addition, special attention is given to the book collections of monasteries in the Kingdom of Cyprus and the libraries in the Despotate of the Morea, one of the last Greek bastions to hold out against the Turkish conquest, where the famous Neoplatonist philosopher Plethon taught. Altogether there are nine chapters in this volume and the text is enlivened with more than two hundred color and black-and-white illustrations covering a wide variety of subjects, such as illuminated manuscripts, engravings, maps, drawings, archaeological sites and imaginary and real library interiors. The ninth chapter deals with the architectural characteristics of Byzantine libraries from the end of Late Antiquity to the monastic libraries of the eleventh century onwards. hardcover, dust jacket. 8.5 x 11.5 inches. hardcover, dust jacket. 532 pages. Volume IV. This fourth volume discusses the publishing procedure for secular and religious writings of late antiquity and the factors that led to the impoverishment of the monumental libraries in Rome. New centers of learning grew up in the monasteries, where great libraries containing educational and instructive books and representative works of Christian literature came into being. Monastic libraries were founded throughout Europe, including the regions with Celtic and Anglo-Saxon populations: those at Monte Cassino, Bobbio, St. Gallen, Fulda, Cluny and elsewhere are dealt with extensively. Mention is also made of the libraries founded in universities and of the new philosophy of forming school libraries, as in Bologna and Paris. Eight chapters unfold the events that influenced the tradition of libraries in the West beginning when Christianity was imposed as the official religion of the Empire. The first chapter includes the realignment of populations of the North, the formation of new kingdoms, and the emergence of new intellectual centres. The more general movement of books is contrasted to the reproduction of books with Roman literary works of the Late Roman period and the issue of Christian education is touched upon discussing its models according to the Church Fathers, as well as the ancient personalities who exchanged letters with Christians on the topic of the role played by monastic centres in relation to books. Chapter two presents the practices of authorship and publication, the reproduction of books, and their availability movement according to St. Jerome. An attempt is also made to reconstruct the library of St. Augustine, calculating which books he would have required in order to complete his written works. Lastly, the Vivarium is also described as a model monastic centre, as are the role of the scriptorium and the significance of the Bible in the Christian conscience. The third chapter is devoted to the British Isles: the promotion of regional tribes to kingdoms, the course of their conversion to Christianity, and the nature of the education cultivated in the monastic centres of the period. Mention is also made of the role played by the various local centres in the preservation of ancient literature, and its transfusion by missionaries to Continental Europe from the pre-Carolingian era on. The fourth chapter deals with the Carolingian era, Charlemagne's contribution to upgrading schooling, the foundation of a considerable number of monastic centres based on books, and the chronicle of the founding of Charlemagne's personal library. There is also an extensive description of two major monastic centres of books, St. Gallen and Corbie, as well as descriptions of their scriptorium and library. Chapter five assesses the influence exerted by the Carolingian period in the diffusion of knowledge and books in general and gives examples of the private libraries of men and officials of the Church. The birth of a new family of books is noted as national languages find their place, and educational centres and their libraries are established in cathedrals. The birth of the university in all the European countries is the subject of the sixth chapter, as an unprecedented system in regard to books, and an indispensable tool for education. There is an extensive description of the Sorbonne's college library and of the new teaching methods, comprising theology and a reassessment of the Aristotelian corpus. The interests of eminent men of letters are outlined in chapter seven, in the matter of books and the genesis of the French royal library, with a chronicle of the papal library at Avignon and at Hereford Cathedral. Finally, chapter eight is an overview of the installation of the library as architecture. The diverse bookstands serving as diminutive 'libraries' are described, up to the time when chambers were set aside to function as libraries.
