Purple illustrated dust jacket with white and black lettering on cover and spine. Jacket is wrapped in Mylar and is in fine condition. Tight binding and clean interior. Includes map design on endpapers and occasional black and white illustrations. Pierre-Jean De Smet (1801-1873) was a Jesuit priest remembered for his missionary work with Native Americans and his extensive travels through the American frontier. This book contains his account of the conversion of a woman from the Coeur-d'Alene tribe, numerous letters written by De Smet, and a "Vocabulary of the Skalzi (Kootenai)".
