Book First Edition
Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Printing. 158 Pages. Brown cloth with red spine lettering and on the front is Baumann's famous logo, Hand over Red Heart. No defects to book noted. Illustrated with 125 color plates. Dust jacket consists of a light orange wrap-around heavily plasticized cover with flaps. Attractive, very high quality binding and paper. Laid in is the 1993-94 Museum of Fine Arts Exhibition's five page folded brochure. Of all the artists who have called Santa Fe their home, Baumann is one of the town's most beloved. He arrived in 1918 as the small, active art community was just developing into a cultural center for influential and creative people from around the country. Like other immigrant artists of his generation, German-born Baumann understood the importance of simultaneously establishing a commitment to the local community while keeping professional contacts current around the world. As his reputation as a master printmaker grew internationally, Baumann strengthened his ties to the Santa Fe art community that was his home for more than fifty years. The Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe is in a unique position to organize the exhibition that is the basis for this publication by having the world's largest collection of works by Gustave Baumann. The collection includes every period of Baumann's artistic career, beginning with his student work in Munich in 1905; his Chicago period of 1906-1909; his 1910-1916 years in Brown County, Indiana; his 1917 works done in New York City, the upstate New York town of Wyoming, and in Provincetown; his work in Arizona and California in the 1920s; and the vibrant and brightly colored woodcuts of New Mexico, the place which provided the artist with the greatest number of subjects. In addition to cataloging nearly every color woodcut executed in New Mexico, the Baumann collection at the Museum of Fine Arts also includes numerous sketchbooks; preliminary etches in pastel, pencil, crayon, watercolor; fifty-three gouache paintings that directly relate to the finished woodcut prints; oil paintings; a progressive series of woodcut prints with the blocks; advertising and illustrative material; woodcuts for family and friends' birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, and other holidays; memorabilia comprised of designs, photographs, postcards, and treasure-filled scrapbooks; and virtually the entire hand-carved marionette collection with over 60 marionettes, set designs, original scripts, stage, and props. Contents: Preface, Hand of a Craftsman Heart of an Artist, Gustave Baumann in the West, Gouaches and Woodcuts 1905-1952, and Notes. Large heavy book that may incur additional charges for Priority Shipping to some locations.
