La date correspond au premier anniversaire des émeutes de Stonewall, qui ont lancé le mouvement de libération LGBTQ+ aux Etats-Unis. Nous sommes partis de Christopher Street, haut lieu de la culture gay dans Greenwich Village, et avons remonté la 6e Avenue jusqu'à Central Park. Pour terminer la journée, un concours du plus long baiser a été organisé au milieu du parc ! C'était un grand moment de joie, d'amour et de liberté. Ce couple, qui s'est embrassé pendant des heures sous un parapluie, n'avait visiblement que faire des photographes ! » (Entretien avec Clément Thierry, 2021) Exceptionnelle histoire imagée de 15 photographies originales noir et blanc en tirage argentique d'époque, signées au verso par l'artiste. Toutes portent au verso le tampon de Jean-Pierre Laffont pour l'agence Gamma, certaines présentent également une longue légende ronéotypée en français. Les tirages originaux de ces photographies sont d'une insigne rareté, les musées et galeries ne possédant que des retirages. Cet ensemble constitue un émouvant témoignage des prémices de la désormais célèbre Marche des fiertés, au lendemain des émeutes de Stonewall premier jalon de l'émergence du mouvement LGBTQ+ aux Etats-Unis et dans le monde. Le 28 juin 1969, la police effectua une descente au Stonewall, un bar dansant de Greenwich Village, tenu par la mafia et recevant une clientèle essentiellement constituée d'homosexuels et de personnes transgenres. A cette époque, les Etats-Unis interdisaient aux établissements de servir de l'alcool aux homosexuels et ces derniers étaient souvent victimes de violences policières. Cette soirée au Stonewall fut celle de trop : les policiers, acculés par les clients, furent contraints de se retrancher à l'intérieur du bar et l'émeute dura sept jours. Il faudra attendre cinquante ans, le 6 juin 2019, pour que le New York City Police Department présente ses excuses à la communauté LGBT. Les évènements du Stonewall, aujourd'hui considérés comme fondateurs de la libération gay, menèrent à la formation de certains des premiers groupes d'activistes homosexuels radicaux, tels que le Gay Liberation Front et Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (plus connu sous l'acronyme STAR et fondé par deux des plus célèbres militantes transgenres : Marsha P. Johnson et Sylvia Rivera). Il s'agit dès lors de transformer ce moment en un mouvement. C'est dans cette perspective que s'organise, le 28 juin 1970, un an jour pour jour après les émeutes de Stonewall, la Christopher Street Libération Day March. Le défilé, constitué de seulement quelques courageux groupes au départ de Sheridan Square (Greenwich village) voit ses rangs largement augmentés à l'arrivée à Sheep Meadow (Central Park), réunissant alors plus de 10 000 manifestants. Cette manifestation aura lieu chaque été, à New York et dans d'autres grandes villes américaines, avant de toucher d'autres continents quelques années plus tard, devenant aujourd'hui un marqueur des sociétés démocratiques à travers le monde. Notre ensemble de photographies montre la diversité des participants brandissant des pancartes aux nombreux slogans tels que « Smash Sexism » ou encore « Perverts' union for gay liberation ». D'autres arborent des t-shirts aux messages engagés - « Femme / Butch », « Master / Slave » - ou se trouvent dans leur plus simple appareil. On repère également quelques marcheurs vêtus de t-shirts noirs floqués de la lettre grecque lambda (?) : il s'agit de celle choisie par la Gay Activist Alliance (GAA), car elle est synonyme de libération et peut facilement se confondre avec les insignes des fraternités des colleges américains. Elle sera officiellement reconnue comme le symbole international gay et lesbien lors du Congrès international de droit gay à Édimbourg en 1974. On reconnaît sur deux clichés le révérend Robert Clement dans ses habits religieux.
