Octavo, navy blue cloth (hardcover), 400 pp, 9 fold-out maps, notes, Appendixes. Fine in a Fine dust jacket with envelope of enclosed maps. From Publisher: Widely regarded as the best eyewitness account of the Battle of New Orleans, Arsène LaCarrière Latour's Historical Memoir records first-hand the dramatic events of the climactic military campaign of the War of 1812. This revised and expanded edition includes a substantial new biographical introduction based on a group of manuscripts relating to the battle recently acquired from Latour's descendants in France. Only months after the battle ended, Latour, who was General Andrew Jackson's principal army engineer, began interviewing witnesses and key participants in order to create a comprehensive record based on first-hand accounts. The work's most significant value derives from these accounts--of numerous individuals who participated in a crucial moment in the history of the United States-- reproduced in the book's appendix. As the first full-length treatment of the New Orleans campaign, the book also offers perceptive analysis of battle preparations, terrain, and strategy by the man who designed many of the American defenses. This new edition also includes nine three-color foldout maps illustrating the course of the battle. Latour characterized it as a conflict "which preserved our country from conquest and desolation." As a key figure in the conflict who knew many of the other main actors and personally collected their reports and observations, Latour provides a record which will never be replaced. xx,264,cxc pp. plus frontispiece portrait. Lacks the atlas. Contemporary calf, spine gilt, leather label. Front board heavily worn with leather peeled away. Front hinge cracked but solid, corners and head and foot of spine worn. Contemporary ownership inscription of Lawrence Washington on front flyleaf and in text, some notations to text. Dampstaining to lower half of first few leaves, tanning and foxing throughout. About good. One of the most important books on the War of 1812 in the South and West, describing the campaign around the battle of New Orleans. "Major Latour's account of the military events is minute and interesting, and the appendix contains an invaluable collection of state papers" - Sabin. "Chief authority, well-documented, on these operations" - Howes. Theodore Roosevelt, in his NAVAL WAR OF 1812, remarks that "Latour (who was General Jackson's chief engineer) is the only trustworthy contemporary American historian of this war" (quoted in Streeter). Latour's text was translated from the French by H.P. Nugent. The portrait of Jackson, not found in all copies, is present here, and is a rare early likeness. This copy is from the library of George Washington's nephew, Lawrence, an interesting association. SABIN 39214. CLARK II:158. STREETER SALE 1075. HOWES L124, "aa." SHAW & SHOEMAKER 38034, 38035. The appendix contains copies of documents relating to the campaign, and the atlas with its plates and maps is invaluable. Theodore Roosevelt in his Naval War of 1812, p. 483 note, remarks, "Latour (who was General Jackson's chief engineer) is the only trustworthy contemporary American historian of this war, and even he at times absurdly exaggerates the British forces and loss" (Streeter). The maps constitute the most valuable cartographic record of the war on the Gulf Coast, they include a general map of the seat of war in Louisiana and Florida, movements of Jackson's troops, attacks on both British and American fortifications including at Mobile Point and in and around New Orleans and the Mississippi. Howes, L124; Sabin 39214; Streeter 1075.
