Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Second Edition. London & New York: T. Fisher Unwin & G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1888. Emily Lawless (1845-1913) was an "unflagging Unionist," although not as hostile to nationalism as her brother. Although Yeats disliked her politics, he thought her a very good writer. Her novels tended to have peasants as heroes but with equally sympathetic landlords. Stephen Gwynn thought that she despised the current day but became a rebel when writing of the past. Her most famous novel is Hurrish (1886), set in the Burren country of County Clare; she also wrote a critical study of Maria Edgeworth in 1905. She never married, and is thought today to have been Gay. This is a Very Good copy of the Second Edition, part of the "Story of the Nations" series, and rather uncommon. Green cloth decorative binding, filled in black, red, and gilt. Clean text; 435 pages, indexed, with 24 pages of publisher's adverts in the back. There is a contemporary bookseller's Lending Library record on the front paste-down, with two borrowers listed. Very mildly rubbed; there is a stain on the rear cover. The gutters are cracked, but holding. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Second Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket.
