Après avoir détourné Walt Disney avec Firmin, le rat le moins "chou" (et le moins animal) de la littérature fabuliste animalière, Sam Savage s'attaquerait-il à Mme de Sévigné ? De fait, La Complainte du Paresseux est un roman épistolaire, mais à sens unique (voire pire). D'ailleurs chez Savage, le pire plane toujours, c'est même très manifestement là que vit Andrew Whittaker, littérateur méconnu par ses contemporains et maltraité par la vie.C'est seul contre tous et dans une misère galopante qu'Andrew tente de maintenir à flot Mousse, exigeante et néanmoins minable revue littéraire défricheuse de talents, tout en gérant les avanies locatives d'un petit immeuble de rapport. Nous sommes au fin fond de l'Amérique des années 1970, sous le règne de "la clique de Nixon", et il n'est pas aisé d'accoucher l'avant-garde littéraire d'un pays qui patauge dans ses conservatismes, tout en réglant des problèmes de plomberie, de locataires "de basse qualité" et en affrontant les médisances d'un environnement provincial petit-bourgeois.On tombe dans l'intimité d'Andrew, irrésistible odieux personnage, raté rageur et menteur à la mélancolie féroce et toxique, à l'humour proprement redoutable et à la philosophie questionnable, à travers son abondante correspondance : à son ex, qui a fui à New York pour s'adonner à l'art dramatique (et qui la blâmerait ?), à ses vieux copains de fac devenus "quelqu'un" dans le monde des lettres et qu'il tente d'attirer comme invités vedettes d'un improbable festival pour lequel il fomente un programme inquiétant, à des aspirants auteurs qui lui soumettent des textes pour sa revue mais aussi à son banquier (inénarrable diatribe !) ou à ses locataires auxquels il réclame un loyer ou refuse une réparation, quand il n'emprunte pas l'identité, réelle ou fictive, de supposés supporters de son travail pour prendre sa propre défense dans le courrier des lecteurs de publications concurrentes.Il tombe aussi sous le sens qu'Andrew Whittaker, bien que très occupé et malgré le marasme des jours adverses, poursuit, au sens littéral, hélas, une oeuvre dont nous découvrons les ébauches, et dont le joyau pourrait être ce projet d'un dictionnaire des cris de douleurs dans toutes les langues, toutes les cultures et chez toutes les espèces : ainsi du cri du aï (le paresseux) qui donne son titre au roman, animal dont le destin d'une infinie tristesse n'est pas sans rappeler celui de notre antihéros.On retrouve dans cet autoportrait kaléidoscopique les thèmes de prédilection de l'auteur : la solitude, la déchéance, physique, morale, psychique et financière, ici visitée dans ses moindres recoins, et la noire ironie du sort des hommes. Et l'on retrouve aussi son talent singulier pour faire surgir le rire des situations les plus sombres, des blessures les plus douloureuses, des obsessions les plus incongrues.Et quand Firmin fourmillait de références et de clins d'oeil littéraires, c'est ici l'ombre tutélaire de Fernando Pessoa qui baigne le délire paranoïaque d'une personnalité complexe voire multiple aux prises avec des rêves et des aspirations mal ajustés.
