First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A nicely kept copy. Previous owner's name and address label on flyleaf, contents otherwise unmarked, price-clipped jacket. the book offers a very comprehensive introduction to English country house embroideries and tapestries through the 16th to the 19th centuries, mainly because of the unique circumstances which have led to the preservation of the textiles at Hardwick. There are generous colour illustrations, an engaging overview of the rise and decline of the British aristocracy, and a tantalising peep into the lives of the people who helped create some of the amazingly varied styles of embroidered and woven textiles in the collection, not least Bess of Hardwick who is a legend in herself. Lace is a decorative fabric that evolved in response to developments in furnishing and dress. This exhibition is presented with discussions of the lace that is pictured in portraits, as well as actual examples of lace. Origins and development of particular types of work such as drawn-thread, cut holes, open geometric cutwork, tiny projecting points, free needle lace, metal thread, bobbin lace, and more, are discussed in relation to influences from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Links between other decorative arts, such as woven silk, are compared. Personal taste as well as financial and social status dictated what lace an individual chose to wear; consequently the lace shown in the portraits at Frederiksborg Castle can help to complete our understanding of the sitters., English, Year1994, Illust.
