Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. All plates bound in, secure and undamaged. (illustrator). 8 vo, 417 pp, including Appendix, Addendum, Plus: [Table of] Contents and List of Plates [16], at rear. Letter of the Secretary of the Navy Bound in brown cloth covered, deeply embossed, boards. Binding is square, and solid. Corners are bumped, covers ar spotted front and rear, spine is pretty clean, worn at the top, with one very short tear, and a second one a quarter inch long. Interior first fep has signature of previous owner "Geo. Spafford", with neat green stamp beneath, of full name. Text is foxed throughout. Good quality paper!!.

Both text volumes have previous owners name, stamp and notations on first free endpapers. Library bookplates and notations on first pastedowns. Text volume I by Lieutenant Herndon, (1853) plus map volume which contain two large fold out maps. Text volume II by Lieutenant Lardner Gibbon, (1854) plus a map volume with 3 larg fold out maps. 4 volumes in all. Volume I (Herndon volume) has brown cloth boards which are rubbed and soiled. Corners and edges are frayed and worn. Two inch separation at upper gutter. Cracked hinge. Occasional foxing and soil throughout. Accompanying map volume has title in gold on front board, and impressed designs match text volume. Boards are worn, rubbed and soiled. Spine has been completely tape repaired and tape is unravelling in spots. The two folding maps within are intact, with closed tears at folds. Volume II (Gibbons volume) has textured brown cloth boards with impressed design. Board corners and spine ends are frayed. Rubbing and chipping. Cracked hinge. Occasional foxing and soil throughout.Accompanying map volume has title in gold on front board, and impressed designs match text volume. Boards are worn, rubbed and soiled. The two fold out maps are intact, with a few fold tears.
