Book is in Good condition, with light handling, some discoloration to bottom edges of boards, and previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Binding is tight, boards are straight, corners sharp. Clear acetate dust jacket is in Acceptable condition, with toning from age, overall light rubbing and scuffing, with several cracks and chips to head and tail of spine. Dark green lettering to front of jacket remains vivid and even. Publisher's bandeau shows light shelfwear.

Insgesamt 155 Seiten mit 50 Farbtafeln und 159 schwarz- weiß Abbildungen und 8 Zeichnungen, alle Texte in englischer Sprache. Inhalt: Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, genannt Balthus, geboren am 29. Februar 1908 in Paris, gestorben am 18. Februar 2001 zu Rossinière in der Schweiz war ein polnisch- deutsch- französischer Maler. Nach der Trennung von ihrem Mann zog die Mutter des Künstlers mit den Söhnen Balthazar und Pierre in die Schweiz, zunächst nach Bern und später nach Beatenberg, wo sie zur Geliebten des Dichters Rainer Maria Rilke wurde. Dieser wurde auch zum Patenonkel Balthazars und gab ihm den Kosenamen >Balthusz<, aus dem sich sein späterer Künstlername Balthus entwickelte. Rilke erkannte die künstlerische Begabung des Jungen früh und förderte dessen künstlerische Entwicklung. 1991 erhielt er für sein Lebenswerk den Praemium Imperiale. Balthus hinterließ ein - gemessen an seiner langen Schaffensperiode - relativ schmales Werk von rund 350 Gemälden und 1 600 Zeichnungen. Balthus' Lieblingssujet waren unterschwellig sexuell getönte Portraits von Mädchen im Alter von etwa 13 Jahren, die sich ihrer Wirkung noch nicht bewusst sind und damit den erwachsenen Betrachter kompromittieren. Diese Ambivalenz war und ist Anlass heftiger Kontroversen. Für Balthus hingegen drückt diese Vorstufe der Frau nichts Erotisches aus, sondern zeige noch göttliche Aspekte des Menschen und offenbare engelhafte Züge, die er als Maler sehe und ihnen Gestalt verleihen wolle.
