"Rody Johnson long thought about his father's volunteer adventures with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary during World War II. As a child, between marbles games at school, he had heard talk of ships blowing up off the Florida coast, and of Nazi submarines. Searching for details of that time, Johnson became caught up in the excitement of meeting the famous Peter Cremer, Commander of German submarine U-333. Cremer's U-boat had torpedoed the tanker Java Arrow off Vero Beach in early 1942. Kit Johnson, Rody's father, in hs small fishing craft, had rescued the survivors - 22 bleeding, burned crewmen. Kit Johnson received no medals; he had been a civilian volunteer. He had placed himself at risk, expecting nothing in return. Rody Johnson got to know the German U-boat Commander and began to realize that his father, Kit, by then held prisoner of Alzheimer's disease, had also served, as did Cremer, on the front line of the sea war - he too was a hero." EXCERPT from Different Battles: In the deeper water 300 yards east of the buoy, a 200-foot German submarine rose from the bottom as if prepared to surface. THe U-boat had arrived the previous night after a 4,000 mile, 36 day trip across the Atlantic - destination: the Bether Shoal buoy. Its mission was to fire its 17 tirpedoes to sink U.S. and Allied shipping. THe submarine, designated U-333 carried a crew of 55 nd was commanded by Peer Cremer, a bearded, 31 year old graduated of the German Naval Academy. The sub's conning tower broker the surface in a swirl of phosphorous-streaked foam. Cremer and four lookouts scrambled onto the bridge and each quickly scanned his assigned quarter of the compas. Cremer searched the surface with his binoculars, then looked skyward seeking sings of enemy activity. The sea lay quiet. He dropped his binoculars, letting them hang around his neck, and glanced at the buoy as it blinked and at the lights of the coast beyond, "These Americans," he said to the lookout standing on the starboard side, "they don't know that they are at war!" About the author: "Rody Johnson grew up in Vero Beach, Florida. With electrical engineering and MBA degrees from the University of Virginia, he spent most of his career in the electronic systems business working for the Harris Corporation. He later became thepublisher of a weelkly newspaper in Florida. He and his wife, artist Katharine Johnson, live in Lewisburg, West Virginia, and Vero Beach, wher he fly fishes, kayaks, and writes.
