About this Item: Los Alamos Historical Society, Los Alamos, New Mexico, U.S.A., 1981. Trade Paperback. Condition: As New. Lilienthal, Betty - Photographs (illustrator). Edition Not Stated. 120 Pages Indexed. Black and white photographs and drawings on almost every page. Los Alamos County lies in north-central New Mexico, 25 miles northwest of Santa Fe. Created in 1949 after the laboratory at Los Alamos was made a permanent Federal installation it is the smallest county in New Mexico. The county can be divided into five sections. The arid southeastern section, White Rock, holds remains of ancient Indian occupation, as does Otowi, at the east-central boundary. Homesteading and logging were prominent in Garcia Canyon, at the northern end of the county, where the vegetation grades from open pinon-juniper mesatops to ponderosa forests. At the southwestern corner, in the West Jemez Section, are steep, heavily-wooded slopes, part of the rime of the Valles Caldera. In the past these were the sites of logging activity, water development, and pasageways to the high meadows of the Jemez Pile. In the northwest lie wild and rugged Guaje Canyon and Caballo Mountain. This book is about the history and heritage of Los Alamos and these surrounding areas. Size: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2". Seller Inventory # 8352

About this Item: Los Alamos Historical Society, Los Alamos, New Mexico, 1993. Trade Paperback. Condition: As New. Lilienthal, Betty - Photographs (illustrator). Second Edition. 123 Pages Indexed. The small town of Los Alamos, New Mexico, thirty-five miles north of Santa Fe, is known as the birthplace of the atomic age. It is set in some of the Southwest's most magnificent country. Dorothy Hoard, a resident since 1963, has hiked Los Alamos County with a naturalist's awareness and distills her experiences into a small treasure of a book that is much more than a hiking guide. In addition to practical descriptions of twenty-four hikes throughout the county, the author provides a rich background of human history interwoven with the natural history of plants and rocks, birds and animals. Invaluable for hiker and armchair explorer alike, Los Alamos Outdoors leads the reader through canyons and over mountains across a landscape of striking beauty. The author's delight in her surroundings illuminates every page. Illustrated with topographical maps of each hike and with the author's own drawings and photographs by Betty Lilienthal. Size: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2". Seller Inventory # 9793
