Condition: G. Photos (illustrator). Laid in menu of testimonial dinner 12/12/1974 of Maine Governor Curtis. Brown binding, gilt lettering. Some fading at edges. Muskie writes that when Curtis leaves office in January 1975 he will bring to a close one of the most creative and energetic eras in the history of Maine state government. Author Lipez worked for Curtis for three years and became a partisan. Curtis was governor from 1967 to 1974. He had climbed Mount Katahdin and canoed the Allagash River and helped to modernize Maine government. The Republican party with few exceptions had dominated Maine politics since the Civil War, controlled the statehouse, and became a formidable protector of the privileged few. Curtis sought more than glory. He knew how closed and static live in Maine had become and what hardships it imposed. He had grievances, he knew who the culprits were, and he was determined to make a difference. His triumph is that he both succeeded and survived. (from the introduction by the author). Binding faded.
