Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+ dj. First Edition. [a nice clean book with no discernible wear; the jacket has a fewsmall nicks and some associated dog-earring at the top of the spine, some modest surface wear, a tiny closed tear at the top edge of the rear panel and another, even tinier chip at the bottom edge]. (B&W photographs) A sensational-bordering-on-lurid memoir by Charlie Chaplin's second wife -- a child bride, basically, who "he had taken under his wing at twelve and into his bed at fifteen," and married when she was pregnant at sixteen. Later in her life, she claimed that her co-author, Cooper, had re-edited her original manuscript and introduced numerous inaccuracies, distortions, exaggerations, and fabrications. At the time of her death in 1995 she was at work on another, more truthful memoir, which was eventually published several years later.

This minor actress had bit parts in Charlie Chaplin's 1921 films "The Kid" and "The Idle Class" and tested for the 1925 "The Gold Rush" -- but after an affair with the 35-year-old star and pregnancy they wed; two children and two years later their divorce proved a media sensation and produced the largest settlement of the day; she appeared in one film in the 1930s and another in the 1940s, ending up a Beverly Hills department store clerk. Handsome "Very best Wishes / Lita Grey Chaplin" in blue ballpoint on a heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., n.y. Fine. Undated, but a superb later life example.

Tight and Near Fine to Fine in a crisp, price-intact, Near Fine to Fine dustjacket. The stated 2nd printing. Written by Lady Grey Chaplin, who, according to the dustjacket flap, was a "pregnant, frightened, sixteen-year-old bride named Lita Grey, a child Chaplin had taken under his wing at twelve and into his bed at fifteen.
