Illustrated with b-w halftone frontis and ten plates. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . The Call of the Wild is a short adventure novel by Jack London, published in 1903 and set in Yukon, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush, when strong sled dogs were in high demand. The central character of the novel is a dog named Buck. The story opens at a ranch in Santa Clara Valley, California, when Buck is stolen from his home and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. He becomes progressively more primitive and wild in the harsh environment, where he is forced to fight to survive and dominate other dogs. By the end, he sheds the veneer of civilization, and relies on primordial instinct and learned experience to emerge as a leader in the wild. . London spent almost a year in the Yukon, and his observations form much of the material for the book. The story was serialized in The Saturday Evening Post in the summer of 1903 and was published later that year in book form. The book's great popularity and success made a reputation for London.

Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 254 pp. Fair, with some speckling to covers, former-owner bookplate, and darkening to endpapers; in a Good, mylar protected dust jacket with light speckling. From dust jacket: Air Marshal Sir Philip Livingston K.B.E., A.F.C., former Director-General Medical Services of the Royal Air Force, writes the autobiography of his distinguished career in which, after a boyhood and youth spent on Vancouver Islands, B.C., he migrated to England to take his medical course at Jesus College, Cambridge, and London Hospital, Whitechapel. Following the experience of his early manhood, during which he was a member of the Cambridge crew in the 1914 Boat Race, then later a "young doc" in the British Navy in the 1914 - 18 War, he describes his medical life in the early days of the R.F. in India and Iraq. During his tour in India his interest in ophthalmology was awakened. He took a Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery in 1923, quickly followed by the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, in 1925. Equipped with these qualifications, the author embarked on the study of ophthalmology in its application to flying. He soon realised that a full understanding of aviation optics could best be gained by qualification as a pilot. He won his wings in Iraq in 1931. From then on, his research work was focused on the practical aspects of flying: and he made important pioneer studies on night vision and eye muscle training. On the outbreak of War his investigations in connection with the visual acuity of R.A.F. aircrew were redoubled in intensity and their practical value, which was recognised in 1942 by the award of the A.F.C., became of ever-increasing importance in the winning of the war. Aviation, Medicine, Military History, Military Biography, Royal Air Force, R. A. F. zslic.
