Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Printed in Great Britain. Second Impression. [Stated, with date, on the copyright page.] Preface, Introduction, extensive Footnotes and References, Bibliography, Appendix, Indexes; viii, 322 pages; followed by publisher's catalogue. The attractive deep-green cloth is in fine shape except for a serious bump at the head of the spine---the book's only flaw. [Please see multiple images of the actual book.] The brilliant gilt on the spine remains unaffected, as does the interior: it is lovely, crisp and clean. The fragile, price-clipped dust jacket, which has protected the book so well, has a sunned spine with a few small chips; no text affected. "To the present interpreter Plato is a writer, teacher, and thinker, reflecting the life of his own times and working toward the establishment of an ideal community. Technically he is a comparative philosopher, comparing dialectically the chief varieties of philosophic belief: with a bias in favour of idealism, as contrasted with a simple realism and an equally simple pragmatism, but presenting his views dramatically and leaving it to the reader to reach decisions of his own. Confident above all things that in the balanced philosophic life, as it is more and more brought to bear upon the space-time world, is to be found the solution of all human problems, he sets himself to release the sources of that life, wherever possible, and calls upon all friends of ideas to join him in this co-operative quest."---from the Preface. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking. Please note that, due to COVID-19, overseas shipping may incur unusual delays.
