Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a chronicle of a six-week Alpine adventure to some of Switzerland's most iconic beauty spots, set against the backdrop of the Swiss Alps and the Italian Lakes. It begins with an overview and appreciation for the natural beauty of the Alps, and the growing accessibility of mountaineering in the 1800s. The author takes the reader on a virtual ascent of the Furka Pass, along the Maienwand, to Grimsel, expertly weaving in detailed descriptions of the local flora and fauna, the region's inhabitants and their customs, and the geological and meteorological characteristics of the mountain range. The engaging encounters with a local guide and other fellow travelers add a personal dimension to the narrative that at once informs and entertains. The author skillfully balances descriptive prose with reflections on the nature of adventure, modern life, and the allure of the natural world, creating a work that is at once informative and thought-provoking. First Edition
First edition. 8vo. (6), 123, (1) pp. Folding frontispiece map engraved by E. Weller, with colored lines showing the itinerary and the part of the route traveled on foot. This copy inscribed on the half-title in December 1856 by Longman to Mrs. Charles Dickens. Longman (1813-1877) was a member of the multi-generation British publishing family which had established itself in the 18th century; Catherine Dickens (1815-1879) was the wife of Charles Dickens, and the author of an 1851 book on domestic management entitled "What Shall We Have for Dinner?," published under the pseudonym "Lady Maria Clutterbuck." Fairly uncommon work, OCLC locating but 11 copies, five in the United States (Harvard, Princeton, Yale, UCLA, American Alpine Club). Later three-quarter leather (corners repaired at tips) and brown cloth, rebacked (original spine laid down), top edge red. Still a very good copy of an uncommon privately printed tour of the Alps.
