Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 143 pages. Louis Clergeau's photographs of the French village of Pontlevoy, taken from 1902 through 1936, offer remarkable vig nettes of rural and small-town life in the Loire Valley. Altogeth er, they create a portrait of the quintessential village of the p eriod. Clergeau was born in 1877 and became interested in photogr aphy as an adolescent. He began a career as a clock maker in Pont levoy in 1902 and divided his time between work and his passion f or photographing the town and nearby countryside. Over the course of thirty-odd years, he took more than 10,000 photographs, all c arefully dated and recorded. Here, a selection of 150 superb imag es devoted to key events and themes in the history of Pontlevoy d epict the village itself, family life, and the great inventions a nd changes that affected life everywhere during the first decades of this century. Clergeau's camera captured winegrowers, early a viators, bicycle races, automobiles maneuvering the narrow villag e streets, and marching bands. We see cobblers, seamstresses, lum bermen, people picnicking with their children, fishing, chatting at the local cafb - Clergeau found much in the everyday life of h is village worth recording. The selection of subjects and the com position of each picture reflect not only the exceptional artisti c sensibility of Louis Clergeau, but also constitute a remarkable historical record of small-town life in the early years of the t wentieth century. A brief epilogue takes the story of Pontlevoy f rom 1936 up through the end of World War II, reproducing photogra phs taken by Clergeau's daughter, Marcelle. Today, a selection of Louis Clergeau's photographs are on permanent display in the Pon tlevoy museum. The text, by Jean-MaryCouderc, gives a historical tour of Pontlevoy and sets the photographs in context.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st U.S. Edition. Collector's item-very good. Without any visible marks of wear. Product Description:Between 1902 and 1936 Louis Clergeau photographed the village of Pontlevoy in the Loire Valley, creating a series of more than 10,000 images, all carefully dated and recorded. This book presents 150 of them, devoted to significant events and themes in the history of the village, and depicting harvests and grape gatherings, marriages, baptisms, markets, festivals, parades, and the inauguration of one of the region's earliest airfields in 1910. There are cobblers, wine-growers, seamstresses, lumbermen, and people picnicking with their children, fishing, or chatting at the cafe. The selection of subjects and the composition of the pictures not only reflect Clergeau's artistic sensibility, but also offer insights into the life of a village long ago. A brief epilogue takes the story of Pontlevoy through to the end of World War II, reproducing photographs taken by Clergeau's daughter.
