Lovell Jr. was a test pilot before becoming a NASA astronaut. His early interest in rocket science took him to places literally out of this world. For a time, Lovell was the world's most traveled astronaut and part of several historical firsts with his flights on Gemini 7, Gemini 12 and Apollo 8. On Apollo 13, Lovell and his crew turned an imminent catastrophe into a "successful failure" as they brought home a damaged spaceship. Lovell retired from the space program in 1973 and has worked in the private sector. The photographs shown in the listing are for display purposes only and not included as part of the sale. No Binding. Condition: USED_FINE. TYPED LETTER personally signed "James Lovell" in blue ink. This letter in on Captain James A. Lovell letterhead, measures 7.0" X 10.0" and is dated May 21, 1980. Letter has normal mailing folds otherwise in fine condition. Letter reads, "Dear Mr. Hathaway: Thank you for your letter of MAy 14 concerning my appearance in Sarasota, Florida on October 30. I have checked my schedule, and that date is open so I believe I can accommodate your client. I can speak to the group on various subjects related to the space program. However, the one I find most acceptable is on the flight of Apollo 13 in which problems occurred; and we had to improvise and struggle to get back home. That talk is interesting and not too technical. It also has some motivational an inspirational aspects which are quite apropos for a marketing group. My usual honorarium is $2,000 plus expenses which would, naturally, be travel and lodging only. Please let me know if this is satisfactory, and I will schedule my time to be in Sarasota on October 30. Sincerely, (signed) James A. Lovell". Born on March 25, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio, James A.
