Deluxe Edition. Quarto. "When I say I, more than one person stands up to be counted." With this photobook Samaras plumbed the narcissistic aesthetic, in anticipation of our coming digital culture. This being 65 of 100 copies SIGNED by Samaras and issued with an original Polaroid; the latter also numbered and signed, housed in glassine envelope affixed to front endpaper. (Roth 212). Minor rubbing to photo-illustrated boards with embossed lettering and photo inset to front panel; these boards black-and-silver, whereas those for the trade edition were black-and-white. Near fine.

First edition of Samarasâ multimedia self-portrait, featuring a self-interview, autobiography, and hundreds of Polaroid images, both black-and-white and in color. Large quarto, original embossed pictorial cloth, mounted cover photograph. Association copy, inscribed by Lucas Samaras to Les Navarre on the title page. Navarre was the director of the Harry Abrams Art Gallery and a close friend of the artist. In fine condition. The primary subject of Lucas Samaras' photographic work is his self-image, often shown distorted. He has worked with multi-media collages, manipulating the wet dyes in Polaroid photographic film to create what he calls "Photo-Transformations". Likewise, Samaras constructed rooms that contained elements from his own personal history, and he described his "Auto-Interviews" as "self-investigatory" interviews in the form of text works.

Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. Single mimeographed typescript sheet. Quarto. Near fine with light wear along the foredge with a few tiny tears. A program for an early Happening performance held at the Reuben Gallery in New York by Allan Kaprow, who coined the phrase to describe the emerging performance art that incorporated various forms of artistic expression such as text, dialogue, sounds, colors, music, and audience participation. The pieces at this show featured: "Gossoon, a chamber event movement," arranged by George Brecht with performances by James Waring, John Baker, and Jerry King; "E.G." by Robert Whitman, starring Jim Dine, Rosalyn Drexler, Pat Oldenburg, and Lucas Samaras; "Intermission Piece" by Kaprow; "Electronic Music" by Richard Maxfield (who co-curated the Fluxus concerts at Yoko Ono's loft with LaMonte Young); and "Vaudeville Collage" written and performed by Dine. An important piece of ephemera from the then-emerging New York performance art scene of the early 1960s. *OCLC* locates no copies of this 1960 performance but one from 1959.

Very good. The Greek born American artist Lucas Samaras debuted his assemblage boxes in this 1961 exhibition. Born in Kastoria, Greece in 1936, the American artist Lucas Samaras met Allan Kaprow and George Segal while studying on a scholarship at Rutgers University. He participated in "Happenings" by Kaprow as well as those created by Claes Oldenburg. His self-investigatory "Auto-Interviews" were text works which he created from his own history and biography. In that same vein, his multi-media collages which he called "Photo-Transformations" were often based on self-portraits. Samaras is also known for his assemblage boxes which were featured in several exhibitions.
