General Regis de Trobriand came to the United States in 1841 as a writer; he later commanded a regiment of volunteers in the Civil War; in 1867 he was appointed a COL in the US Army and posted to Fort Stevenson in the military department of Dakota, the first of several commands he would have in the West-Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Louisiana. At Ft. Stevenson he kept a journal and with meticulous care he described the people he met (Indians, traders, miners, soldiers, adventurers), listened to their tales then told their stories with great literary skill and art sketches. A clean very presentable copy.
