Cloth. Condition: Fair. None (illustrator). A five volume set of works by the famous writer Samuel Johnson, with examples of his vast literary works. Five volumes of a six volume set. Lacking volume I. Samuel Johnson was an important writer and lexicographer. His dictionary was first published in 1755 and was hugely successful. For over 100 years his dictionary was the leading reference work in the field, until the publication of the Oxford English Dictionary. This volume contains: Philological Tracts, Political Tracts, Miscellaneous Tracts, Reviews and Criticism, The Lives of The English Poets, Lives of Eminent Persons Poems, and The Rambler. Only half of the Rambler is included in this set, with half features in volume I which is lacking from this set. 'The Rambler' was a periodical by Samuel Johnson. This publication primarily featured essays and works of non-fiction, with a total of 208 articles published across the set. Samuel Johnson was a poet, essayist, literary critic and lexicographer. Born in 1709, Johnson was a committed Tory, and a devout Anglican. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally worn. Heavily bumped to the head and tail of the spine with loss to the backstrips. Loss to each of the spine labels, heaviest to volume IV. Large cracks to the spine of volume II, and volume IV, with the text block to volume I split in half. Patches of heavy rubbing to the front and rear boards Light offsetting and the odd mark to the front and rear endpapers. Internally binding is strained and failing in places. Binding failed to pages 184-185, 424-425 to volume II. Large tear to page 425. Binding has failed to 304-305, with one gathering detached. Light cockling to numerous pages throughout. Pages are generally bright and clean. Fair. book.

English clergyman, utilitarian, and philosopher, William Paley (1743 - 1805), is best known for his natural theology explanation of the teleological argument for the existence of God. This argument centers around the idea that things in the natural world function on such a complex level, that there must be a higher power. Complete in two volumes. Includes tracts on Christianity, natural history, astronomy, anatomy, morality, and more. Bound in full maroon leather with gilt title and volume numbers, gilt rules, and gilt decoration stamped to spines. Elaborate embossed design to boards. Leather is cracked in places on all four hinges, but boards remain attached. Wear to edges and corners with loss to leather on all corners, some bumped corners. Chipping to leather on spines, rubbing and scuffing to boards. Frontispiece portrait to first volume. Book seller markings to endpapers, else clean and bright interiors. Full speckled edges. A few darker spots (possibly ink) to fore-edge of first volume. Volume I: 290 pages; Volume II: 202 pages plus 2 pages of ads.

Contemporary full tan leather, tooled boards; bright gilt decoration on spines and framing all boards; slight scuffing to edges; notably head and foot of spines, with small amount surface loss; 0.6mm loss at top of spine of volume 3. End papers appear to have been replaced at some point. Neatly scribed owner's name on first prelim on each book, dated 1830; light scattered foxing to prelims.
