First Edition
Hardcover first edition - Original book club edition. An omnibus edition containing three complete mystery novels - The Case of The Drowsy Mosquito by Gardner in which Perry Mason agrees to take on a case of mine ownership manipulation (and suggests marriage to Della Street); Motto for Murder by Mace, set at snowed in house in the Adirondacks; The Affair of The Fainting Butler by Knight set in Los Angeles and featuring Professor Huntoon Rogers. One of the pleasures of these omnibus volumes, which combine three very different works in one book, is the opportunity they create of discovering authors or novels which might be unknown to you. The pages appear to be acid free, and are still white and supple, unlike many books from this era. Each novel paginated individually - 214, 193, 212 pp. Back cover of dust jacket has an ad for the Detective Book Club and a reminder to buy war stamps and bonds. Very good+ in beige cloth in a very good dust jacket (bookplate on front pastedown, some discoloration from the binding process on endpapers, with a faint "old book" musty odor, in a dustjacket with a few chips, some toning to the spine).

Hardcover first edition - Original book club edition. An omnibus edition containing three complete mystery novels - "The Case of the Buried Clock" by Erle Stanley Gardner, a classic Perry Mason novel; "Headlong for Murder" by Madeleine McCoy (under the Merlda Mace pseudonym) is the first novel featuring Christine Anderson, a young blonde Scandinavian from Minnesota, struggling to get by in New York City who isn't going to let anything get in the way of a promised vacation on the Connecticut coast; and "To Catch a Thief" by Craig Rice (under the Daphne Sanders pseudonym), the story of a man who turns to robbery to right the wrongs done by several wealthy stock market manipulators during the Depression. This is considered one of her best novels and is also among the most difficult to find. One of the pleasures of these omnibus volumes, which combine three very different works in one book, is the opportunity they create of discovering authors or novels which might be unknown to you. Published in compliance with the conservation orders of the War Compliance Board, it is surprising that the pages appear to be acid free, and are still white and supple, unlike many wartime books. 622 pp. Very good+ in tan cloth in a very good dust jacket (bookplate on front pastedown, some discoloration from the binding process on endpapers, a faint "old book" musty odor in a dustjacket with a few chips, some toning to the spine). These vintage book club editions are becoming hard-to-find in dustjacket.
