Published by D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1894
Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Various (illustrator). A complete two volume set of this controversial work on the History of the United States Navy, by Edgar Stanton Maclay. Edgar Stanton Maclay was an American journalist and historian, who worked as a reporter for the 'Brooklyn Times' and 'New York Tribune' and served on the editorial staff of the 'Tribune' and the 'New York Sun'. Whilst appointed as the lighthouse keeper at Old Field Point in 1901, Maclay received an appointment at the New York Navy Yard, and hence edited the 'Journal of William Maclay', and produced this work, the 'History of the United States Navy'. The controversy surrounding this work (that ultimately brought about Maclay's dismissal from government employ) was largely due to a passage in the work that stigmatized Rear Admiral Winfield Scott Schley as a "caitiff, poltroon and coward" for his conduct in the naval fight off Santiago, Cuba on 3 July 1898. For this, Maclay's dismissal was ordered by President Roosevelt in 1901. Featuring publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume I. Copiously illustrated throughout with monochromatic maps, plates and in-text illustrations. In the publisher's original cloth binding with embossed copper panel to the front board of each volume. Externally, bumped to extremities and head and tail of spines, resulting in small splits to head of spine volume I. Slight handling marks to rear boards. Front hinge strained after frontispiece, volume II. Internally generally firmly bound, slightly strained in places. Page 625/6 volume II detached but present. Pages very slightly age toned to edges but bright and clean throughout. Offsetting to page 184 and 185, volume I. Ink mark to front free-endpaper, volume I. Closed tear to fore edge of page 401/2, volume II. Very Good. book.
