A nice copy of the geological survey of Great Britain, with folding maps and colour plates Three volumes of the Geological Survey of Great Britain published between 1846 and 1848. With nine folding plates to the rear of volume I, thirty plates to part 1 of volume II, and thirty six plates, thirteen of which are folding to the second part of volume II, collated and complete. Whilst geological surveys were previously published on a county by county basis, these three volumes collect the memoirs of different geologists involved in the survey of Great Britain. Includes a comparison of British mining with that of Saxony, Hungary, and France. With geological maps, and engravings of British fossils. With a small pocket for a library index card to the front pastedown of all three volumes. Volume I lacks the ticket, but it is present in both parts of Volume II. With institutional stamps from Richmond Public Library, and Southwark Public Library to verso of the title page in volume I, and both parts of volume II. With library renewal sticker to recto of front endpapers in both parts of volume II. Sticker from London Special Collection, part of the London Borough of Southward Adult Libraries. Prior owner's ink inscription to title page in each volume, 'Mr Farley'. Stamp from Special Collection, Southwark Library to the bottom edge of the of the text block on all three volumes. Rebound in a blue cloth library binding. Externally, very smart with some light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and some marginal wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned, and a little foxed to the front and rear of some of the volumes, but otherwise pages are generally clean. Very Good Indeed. book.

No Jacket. 1st Edition. 70 x 46 cm page size, All versos blank, title page, index of 38 survey maps along the 141st meridian, 59 x 35.5 cm neat lines, but the actual maps with red contour lines and blue rivers are each 44,5 x 21 cm with titles and facsimile signatures of British and American Commisioners on each sheet. One page of profiles of the boundary, one page of the "Arctic Coast in the Vicinity of the International Boundary in one much more extensiver contour "General Map of the Region Traveled by the Boundary International Line along the 141st Meridian between the White River and Mt. St. Elias. Green end papers, green cloth covered boards with bright gilt lettering on front cover. Interior absolutely pristine with no markings or flaws, but covers bumped at all four corners with some abrasion to edges of spine. These huge, heavy atlases will require extra shiopping cost depending on destination. (Both copies in the same condition.) This atlas gives a limited but extremely careful and detailed survey during the first two decades of the 20th century of an area still difficult of access. It gives the altitude of Mt. St. Elias as 18,000 ft and the modern accepted elevation is 18,008 ft. Thus the elevation of the many glaciers crossed will be of great present day interest. 38 sheets surveyed and monumented 1907-1913 under the Convention signed at Washington April 21st. 1906.
