Brown cloth boards with bevelled edges. Rubbed and bumped at extremities with some marks. Spine ends have some wear with damage to top edge, crease to spine. Gilt design & titles to front cover and spine. Spine is dulled down. Scattered foxing throughout (some of which is quite heavy), occasional light creasing & minor marks, stain to closed page edge. "The war in the north" was originally issued separately. "Old New Zealand" was first published at London in 1863. This is the first combined edition. Publisher: Bentley, London, 1876, first edition. Frederick Edward Maning (5 July 1812 25 July 1883) was an early settler in New Zealand, a writer, and a judge of the Native Land Court. He published two books under the pseudonym of "a Pakeha Maori." Maning arrived in the Hokianga area at age 22, on 30 June 1833, and lived among the Ngapuhi Maori. He took a Maori wife, Moengaroa, of Te Hikutu hapu; of Ngapuhi, and they had four children.
