First Edition Signed
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 236 pages. Published in 1986. The author's seventh novel to be translated into English. One of Manuel Puig's greatest achievements. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the British Edition, which appeared in 1987. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Manuel Puig's "Pubis Angelical" in a felicitous English translation. The follow-up to "Kiss of The Spider Woman", his sensational breakthrough novel in the English-speaking world. "Pubis Angelical" is proof, if it were needed, of a great author going from strength to strength. "With his characteristic panache and originality, Puig, writing at the height of his powers, gives us a tour-de-force of paranoia and sexual obsession" (Publisher's blurb). Apart from his innate theatricality, Manuel Puig was also a profoundly formalist writer. His novel seamlessly follows and weaves together the lives of two women from different periods in history. Manuel Puig's reputation is secure, and his place in world literature canonical: "Kiss of The Spider Woman" was the basis of the great film by Hector Babenco, with William Hurt in an Academy Award-winning performance. It was later adapted into a highly successful Broadway musical. "The Buenos Aires Affair" was the basis of the great film, "Happy Together", by Wong Kar-Wai. "Pubis Angelical" was adapted for the stage in London and New York to enormous critical acclaim. Manuel Puig died of AIDS in 1990, just a few years after he finally achieved the international acclaim he so richly deserved and craved. According to Roberto Bolano, whose critical acumen is trustworthy, this is another Puig masterpiece. An absolute "must-have" title for Manuel Puig collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the front free endpaper by Manuel Puig. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate, as many signed Puigs available online are. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing (American) available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: During his brief lifetime, cut short by fatal illness, Puig signed very few copies of any of his books. This is one of them. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 0394746643. Signed by Author.
