To compile this comprehensive study of the German U-Boat campaigns of the two World Wars the author researched extensively German and British records to present a detailed account of U-Boat operations and the counter-measures that lead to the eventual defeat of the two offensives. However, he also clearly shows how Germany twice came close to success by disrupting Britain's vital Atlantic shipping supply lines. The book covers the two campaigns in chronological order, with the text material complemented by photographs, graphs, charts and tables showing the balance between U-Boat successes and merchat ship losses. Critical factors in the campaigns, political, strategic and tactical, are well explored as are aspects such as the German inability to institute concentrated group attacks in WWI, while their wolf pack operations in WWII brought near success. The convoy system adopted by the Allies late in WWI, but early in WWII, was to be an important influence, as was the entry of the USA into both conflicts. Counters to the U-Boats, including mines and escorts in WWI are also covered. . In WWII aircraft were to play an increasing important role, with technology, particularly electronics, where the advantage continually shifted from one side to the other. The evolution of the U--Boat from the small, primative coastal craft used at the opening of WWI to the development of technically superior models being introduced toward the end of WWII is well documented. The record shows that during the two conflicts U-Boats sank more than 8000 ships of 27million tons of Allied shipping. On the other side off the ledger 999 U-Boats were sunk, taking 33,000 officers and men with them. This was an imporant addition to the naval literature of both World Wars and probably is still the most complete one-volume study of the topic. First edition of 1989 from Arms and Armour, 190 pages including appendices, bibliography, source notes and index. illustrated throughout with b/w photos, title page double page photo spread, numerous maps, charts, tables and graphs. Light grey hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+, former owner stamp top corner FFEP, otherwise internally excellent. Colour art/pictorial DJ also VG+. Hardcover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Maps, Diagrams, Graphs, Drawings Tables Etc (illustrator). 1st. Little in the way of comprehensive academic literature on NZ limnology (the study of bodies of fresh water) was available before this work by Jolly and Brown was published. In his forward to the book M A Chapman, president of the NZ Limnological Society, said it was a milestone "since it was the first time much previously unpublished or scattered and difuse material had been brought together." A handsome and vastly informative volume was the result. Following a general introduction, and maps locating NZ lakes, the content is sub-divided into sections covering Geomorphology, Physical Characteristics, Chemistry and General Biological Features, Plankton Studies, Plant Studies and Animal Studies, each with several sub-sections. Almost 40 years after publication this study is perticularly relevant as the water quality in NZ lakes comes under increasing pressure from unbanisation, agricultural and industrial impacts. First edition of 1975 jointly published by Auckland and Oxford UPs, 388 pages including references, glossary, NZ lakes index, scientific names index and general index. illustrated throughout with B/w photos, maps, drawings (mainly fish), diagrams, graphs, tables etc. Hard covers with light brown wrap-round misty lake photo image VG+ with two small impression marks lower front edge, small dealer stamp lower right corner FFEP, text block otherwise excellent, no inscriptions or markings. Unpacked weight 1kg; may require additional postage for international delivery.

phot., maps, charts, graphs, tables (illustrator). Quarto, paperback,240 pp.,photographs, maps, other illustrations. WAS $75. Transactions of the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales. This book records an RZS forum that discussed whether the animals of arid Australia are 'out on their own' in terms of their unique adaptations for desert life, our distant view of them, and their prospects for the future. The arid zone of Australia is simply too large, too diverse and covered by too many jurisdictions to be encompassed by a single view. It was therefore appropriate that the forum drew together a wide range of skills and outlooks on the history, fauna and management of the arid lands of Australia. As editors, we were dazzled by wonderful photos in scientific presentations. We are delighted to be able to show the arid zone, and the animals in particular, in all their gorgeous colours, as well as to present images of how work is carried out by various researchers. All of this visual material contributes to our grasp of this vast stretch of Australia that is the home to so few Australians. We look forward to a blooming of interest in arid Australia, its diverse fauna and its diverse players.
