About this Item: Northwood Heritage Press, 2011. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition... A detailed study of licensed, infringement and 19th Century copies of Colt percussion revolvers. 361 pages. Large volume. 12.25" x 10.25". Hundreds of large, very detailed color photographs. SIGNED BY THE AUTHORS. Brevete, the Belgian/French word for patent can be observed on many Belgian made licensed (and unlicensed) antique counterparts and duplications of Samuel Colt's Hartford-made percussion revolvers. As explained in detail in this authoritative reference work, "Brevete" has taken on a secondary meaning in the Colt and general antique arms collecting community, to indicate not only all Belgian-made Colt percussion revolvers, but also those made in numerous other countries as well. Hence, whether licensed or unlicensed, most foreign-made antique revolving arms fashioned identically to the Hartford made Colts, including revolvers from Germany, Austria, Turkey, Japan and Russia are all classified under the same heading, Colt Brevete. That's what this trail-blazing study has disclosed so competently. An outstanding and very important reference for the Colt library. Language: eng Language: eng Language: eng. Inscribed by Author(s). About this Item: Northwood Heritage Press, Tucson, Arizona, 2017. Full-Leather. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Ron Paxton (illustrator). Limited Edition. 373 pp., oblong 12 1/4 "x10 1/4", index, bibliography, endnotes, profuse with magnificent color photographs. A fine full leather limited edition copy with gilt edges and ribbon book mark, in a unblemished full-leather slip case. Limited to 75 copies this being #46. SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY AUTHORS ROY MARCOT AND RON PAXTON. This deluxe edition is also hand signed by all the authors. A feature only available in the limited, slip-cased deluxe edition! This is the first completed volume of the four volume set. It contains ten chapters, starting with the early and developmental Sharps metallic cartridge firearms and ending with chapters on buffalo hunting on the frontier and the legendary Sharps buffalo rifles and the hunters that used them. An extraordinary book for the seasoned gun collector as well as the researcher, historian and astute book collector. This four volume set will be the definitive books on the Sharps rifles and carbines. The final chapter provides even more context to the story by presenting notes concerning 199 hunters who corresponded with the Sharps company. The amount of information regarding each hunter varies from short extracts from letters they sent the firm, to full biographies that include photographs. From the standpoint of collectors the most important aspect of these remarks is that in most instances they include details of the rifles that were ordered together with their serial numbers. From a broader perspective the accounts are of significance in that they demonstrate the desperate nature of the men involved. Every strata of American society was represented from Civil War veterans, to recently arrived immigrants and youths eager to make a mark in life. While some were extremely successful, others did not survive the experience. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 003200

Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 342 pp., leatherette binding, frontis portrait, index, bibliography, appendix, footnotes, magnificent photographs, illustrations, and maps. A fine, unread slip cased copy in a fine, bright, unclipped dust jacket. Also with a laid in original informational order form. Two-thousand copies were produced with no reprints, this book has been out of print since the year 2000! SIGNED AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR, this being one of only twelve slip cased editions produced by the author for friends and family. A well researched and written biography, it details the life and career of Colonel Hiram Berdan, the brilliant and often controversial leader of the Civil War's most colorful unit-Berdan's U.S. Sharpshooters. He formed, outfitted, armed and commanded the steely-eyed, green clad marksmen who engaged the Confederates in every battle from McClellan's Peninsula Campaign of 1862, through the famous and bloody Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. The author was the first to publish heretofore unknown facts about Berdan and his patented metallic cartridges and firearms. As one of the industrial Revolution's leading inventive geniuses, Berdan also designed and patented range finders, torpedo boats, cannon fuses, lifeboats, and trans-Atlantic cable-laying machinery, during a creative career spanning over a half a century.
