Condition: Fine. First softcover edition. Fine. xiv+ 401 pp. Introduction by Doris Grumbach. Omnibus of three short novels by Isabel Bolton (pseud. of Mary Britton Miller), first published in 1946, 1949 and 1952. In each, voices move the stories--each carefull constructed narrritive is built by layering of conversation, perception, and inner monologue onto lyrical descriptions of New York City. "Many Mansions" was a National Book Award for Fiction nominee in 1952. Though highly praised as a writer at the time by such critics as Edmund Wilson and Diana Trilling, Bolton had all but disappeared from the literary landscape by the time of her death in 1975.

Her 1952 novel Many Mansions was nominated for the National Book Award for Fiction. Born in New London, Connecticut in 1883 as Mary Britton Miller, she grew up in Boston, Massachusetts and lived for many years in Greenwich Village until her death in 1975. Several of her novels were republished in 1997 in a collection called New York Mosaic.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First edition. Narrow tape remnant on front fly where an article was originally affixed, a good copy in good dustwrapper with some modest loss at the spine ends. The first volume of the author's *New York Mosaic* trilogy. Miller was in her sixties when she published the first of these novels under the name Isabel Bolton. It was praised by Edmund Wilson in *The New Yorker*, who was reportedly greatly disappointed when he met this bright new star in the literary firmament - expecting a brilliant and romantic young writer, and instead meeting an amiable "older woman." Diana Trilling wrote of Bolton, after the publication of her second novel, *The Christmas Tree*, that ". she is the best woman writer of fiction in this country today." However Bolton had all but disappeared from the literary landscape by the time of her death in 1975. With the reissue of the trilogy in 1998 her work is once again getting the attention of serious critics. All three novels are set in New York City and the appeal of Miller's novels bears some resemblance to those of Dawn Powell. A fragile wartime title.
