Seller: Librairie du Cardinal, GRADIGNAN, France
rigide.

De La Croix, folded engr. map of Egypt and 7 (2 folded) plates, contemporary uniform mottled calf with richly gilt spine with raised bands and black morocco title-shield and gilt edges, bookblock sprinkled red, quarto (25 x 20 cm.). = Rare copy of the first Dutch edition. Benoit de Maillet was French consul in Egypt from 1692 to 1708. "In his retirement he decided to publish his memoirs, material which he had collected during his long sojourn in Egypt. (.) Maillet had developed a passionate interest in Arabic, and in Egyptian antiquities, as well as in the contemporary life of the country; he was one of the earliest writers to interest himself in the Arabic architecture of Egypt" (Blackmer).
