Publisher's list here makes this the 21st "Honor Harrington" novel, and indeed it is (or at least was, when written) the final book set in the "Honor Harrington universe," both as to internal chronology and also in order as written. The problem is that approximately between the tenth book ("War of Honor") and what the author reports he'd originally intended to be the eleventh and final book in the series ("At All Costs"), Weber -- emulating certain Renaissance masters who created "studios" of apprentices to help them churn out more works bearing their names -- either brought in co-authors or simply cobbled together "parallel" novels on his own to develop outlying parts of his sprawling narrative tapestry, leading to predictable complaints from some readers who found they needed to read these "satellite" works to "witness" developments which were referred to in the "central" series, but who were then frustrated when they found certain scenes and events from the "main" books either overlapping, or actually repeated, albeit sometimes from different characters' points of view. In fact, by our count this is the 14th true Honor Harrington novel, the series after the core first eight titles (through the impressive "Echoes of Honor") running "Ashes of Victory," "War of Honor," "At All Costs," "Mission of Honor," "A Rising Thunder," and then "Uncompromising Honor," with the "Shadow" titles, and the titles co-authored with Eric Flint, belonging to a parallel subset. Far better than the dismissive label "space opera" would imply, Weber's works build complex characters in complex military and political environments. The two main complaints are his attention to the minutiae of propulsion systems, missile ranges and throw weights, etc. -- which are necessary, up to a point, to convince the reader this world is real and obeys consistent physical laws -- and that he adopts from the model of the navies of the Napoleonic era the presumption that it would take hundreds or even thousands of personnel to staff his warships, even in a highly automated future. Of course, suspension of disbelief for at least SOME premises are necessary to read virtually any science fiction. At any rate, the Harrington novels stand alone to the extent that they don't end with "cliff-hangers," though they do form a chronological series best read in order, starting with "On Basilisk Station" (a 1993 Baen paperback, reissued in hardcover 1999.) The book in hand runs 773 pp., including the 3-page "Afterword." Here reduced from $16.
