Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This study sought to characterize soils from D.R. Congo and devise fertility capability classification interpretations for their agronomic use. Twenty 24 soil pedons were sampled in seven administrative provinces selected to represent the most commonly used landscape positions and to include soils from a variety of soil parent materials occuring throughout the country. Most of the soils studied have both surface and subsoil acidity problems, they have low available phosphorus and total nitrogen contents, and a low capacity to supply potassium. Half of the pedons studied have low contents of Zn, Cu and Mn. In general these conditions are present in ultisols, oxisols and entisols formed from felsic parent materials, Kalahari sands and reworked sediments. Distinct exceptions are the soils formed from basalt, volcanic ash, ferro-magnesian and limestone that have close to neutral pH values and high base saturation. These soils have a range of P sorption characteristics from less than 10 to 120 ug P/g of soil. Soil fertility capability classification (FCC) derived using soil characterization data have shown a wide range of soil management options for an optimal crop production. 152 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This report present soils data for 54 soil profiles sampled at research sites in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Tanzania. Soil chemical, biological, physical and mineralogical properties are variable and call for a site specific approach to soil management for their optimum use from low input to high input agriculture. All the soils from SADC Research sites in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Tanzania have a relatively low to medium fertility status. The main soil physical constraints are lack of moisture and subsoil hardening which is seen by the end of the dry season. Sloping lands call for an appropriate soil erosion control measures (i.e. Conservation farming, landscape approach, etc.). The soil chemical constraints are a low capacity to retain and supply nutrients, a low k reserves and a slightly acid topsoil modifier h for some locations.Climate variability is noticeable when daily rainfall data are disaggregated in different categories and climatic data reveals that 30 to 70 % of rainfall event consist of showers greater or equal to 20 mm of rainfall. This calls for a proper management for rainfall harvesting in the SADC region countries. 192 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This report describes site characterization data, fertility evaluation (FCC) and soils management options for 90 soil profiles sampled in Kenya (Machakos,Kakamega, Malava, Kodera and Embu), Uganda (Bushenyi, Kalyengere, Kachwekano, Namulonge and Kabanyolo), Burundi (Karuzi and Gitega/Mashitsi) and Rwanda (Rubona, Ruhande, Gakuta and Rwerere)agroforestry research sites. Rainfall data are analyzed using gamma distribution and probabilities with long-term daily and monthly data. Soil chemical, biological, physical and mineralogical properties are variable and call for a site specific approach to soil management for their optimum use from low input to high input agriculture. Soils from EAC have a relatively low to medium fertility status. The main soil physical constraints are lack of moisture, shallow depth and subsoil hardening which is seen by the end of the dry season. Sloping lands call for an appropriate soil erosion control measures. The soil chemical constraints are a low capacity to retain and supply nutrients, aluminum toxicity for some research sites. Climatic variability is noticeable. This calls for a proper management for rainfall harvesting in all EAC region countries. 204 pp. Englisch.
