Buckram. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. Maty Grunberg (illustrator). 1st Edition. Eighteen woodcuts by Maty Grunberg, illustrations of the biblical 'Book of Ruth', printed in colour and black and white with accompanying Hebrew text and English translation, with artist's notes, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST ON FINAL PAGE. In black buckram hard folio with gilt titling, lined with red cloth. In 'as issued' 'as new' condition, folio case unworn and unrubbed. Israeli artist Maty Grunberg writes: 'My images come directly from the biblical story, but traces of where I come from can also be found, particularly my early work as stage designer for Israeli theatre. The biblical story is taking place on an imaginary stage, making the observer a voyeur of ancient times. My visual translation of the written words led me to work with the surface of cherry wood. The pattern created by the grain of this wood helped me to bring out the images during the process of woodcutting. During printing, the shining white paper, the coloured shapes of the leaves and the rich black printing ink intensified my images. This story, although ancient, seems to retain its relevance as past perspectives flow into the present events. Both intermingle with what is happening inside Israel today, as well as all over the Diaspora. Waves of immigration to Israel brought many mixed marriages; and abroad many Jewish people are 'marrying out', but aren't they all branches of the same tree of life?' A rare and extremely beautiful set, this set is no 39 of 125 sets printed. A large heavy set, extra postage will be required, please contact us for a quote and photos. Signed by Author(s).
