Marbled text-block edges and end-papers. "The whole embellished throughout with numerous engravings." Folding color frontispiece. Both volumes are in VERY GOOD condition showing the extremities somewhat shelf rubbed, the spines toned and rubbed, light foxing throughout, frontispiece with several short closed tears and slight edge creasing, otherwise the bindings are strong and tight, the text-blocks are unmarked, and the boards remain distinct. As pictured.

Two vols. Thick 8vo. ix, [1], [19]-760; x, [2], 11-742 pp. Both vols. w/ extra-illustrated woodcut-engraved titles, numerous woodcut-engraved plates. Uniformly bound in embossed polished calf, gilt decorated spines, w/ motifs of helmets, globes on spine vol. II, gilt decorations, gilt & red morocco spine labels, marbled fore-edges, marbled endpapers, from the libaries of Edwin Charles Emmons (1826-1914), prosperous Vermont Farmer & Civil War Veteran, enlisted as Corporal, and eventually discharged as Captain, later Dr. W.J. Sivel, w/ bookplates on 2nd flyleaves. Early printing of this well-written history of the world, with special interest on the added section in Vol. II on the induction of California into the United States in 1850, and extensive section on the California gold rush and mining opportunities. In addition, there is an interesting section on the territory of Utah, the reports composed by Dr. John Bernhisel (1799-1991), original delegate of the Utah Territory in the US Congress, with descriptions of the Great Salt Lake, the Great Basin, Great Salt Lake City, and the development of agriculture and industry in Deseret.
