Signed to the verso of title page to Monsieur Lucien Descaves from Fasquelle. Descaves was one of the "Manifeste des Cinq' authors who, following the initial publication of this work, accused Zola of having deserted the naturalist camp, abandoning his troops and betraying his own oeuvre (Whidden, Seth p.108).In French.Loosely inserted is an inscribed note, by the hand of Descaves in French. The note regards the 'Evenings of Medan' lunch hosted on May 3 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this work. A menu card for the event is also inserted. A portrait of Charles Del Fosse is loosely inserted.With a portrait frontispiece of all six contributors.
