Nicht rückblickend, nach jahrelangem Aufenthalt, so wie es in anderen Romanen dieser Art gerne gemacht wird, sondern in Tagebuchform und zwar gleich zu Beginn seines Wohnsitzwechsels in die südfranzösische Landschaft. Die Art und Weise, wie er das tut ist so unterhaltsam, daß man am Ende des Buches am liebsten in der Fortsetzung weiterlesen würde. Ein Jahr in der Provence - in Monaten unterteilt schildert der Autor, wie er und seine Frau die ersten Monate im kurz vorher erstandenen eigenen Haus verbringen. Als Hauptfiguren treten die Bewohner der Provence mit ihren liebenswürdigen und amüsanten Eigenheiten in Aktion. Wer selbst schon einmal in der Provence gewesen ist, der wird feststellen mit welcher Treffsicherheit Mayle Leben und Leute der Landschaft beschreibt - und immer wieder wird seine Verbundheit und Liebe zur Provence spürbar. Der Roman vereinigt Tagebuchberichte, Reiseführer und witzige Kurzgeschichten in einem. Fazit: Daß dieses Buch zum Bestseller wurde ist nicht verwunderlich - sein Erfolg zeigt sich aber vielmehr darin, daß es nicht selten tatsächlich als "alternativer" Provence-Reiseführer benutzt wird. Selten habe ich ein Buch gelesen, dass mich derart begeistert hat. Es war mein erstes Buch von Peter Mayle. Mittlerweile habe ich fast alle von ihm! Beim Lesen des Buches spürt man förmlich die Sonne der Provence auf der Haut. Amüsant schildert der Autor sein erstes Jahr in der Provence. Die Kleinigkeiten des Lebens betont er in erfrischender Art und Weise. Besonders hervorheben möchte ich seine liebenswert schrulligen Nachbarn, Freunde und Handwerker.
