Two original black-and-white portrait photographs of one-time actress Evelyne Aznavour, with an inscribed note in manuscript ink, addressed to Christian de la Maziere. The note is dated "Friday 20" and seems to imply Aznavour having just missed de la Maziere, regrettably, and a future attempt will be made. Both photos with Evelyne's name in manuscript ink on the versos. Housed in original mailing envelope with both names and addresses, and a few doodles, in manuscript ink. Aznavour is enigmatic, with almost no biographic information readily obtainable, but her classic blonde coiffure and light eyes are unquestionable qualities often seen in French cinema of the era. She married entertainer Charles Aznavour in 1956, and the two were split by 1958. These photographs presumably floated between talent agencies before her first and only film credit, "Too Late for Love" (1959), a pseudo-exploitation court drama about selling wine to minors. Christian de la Maziere (1922-2006) was a journalist and member of the Charlemagne Division of the Waffen SS, and was featured in Marcel Ophuls' documentary "The Sorrow and the Pity" (1969), discussing his military service. He worked for the fascist newspaper "Le Pays Libre" before joining Charlemagne, and his autobiography "The Captive Dreamer" (1974) was based largely on experiences at Vichy. After the war he worked briefly as a talent manager, when he would have received these photos. One photo 5 x 6.25 inches, one photo 4.5 x 7 inches, note 5.25 x 8 inches, envelope 5.75 x 8.75 inches. Photos Very Good plus with light horizontal creases, one with a small chip and creasing in top right corner, note Near Fine, envelope Very Good overall.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Original French invitation for the 1958 premiere of a cosmetics aid known as "le Makeur," a hand-held soft-bristled makeup brush. Addressed to M. and Mme. de la Maziere, and dated Tuesday, October 9, 1958, in manuscript ink. Housed in the original mailing envelope, addressed in manuscript ink to "Monsieur et Madame de la Maziere - Cinedis / 44 avenue de Champs-Elysees / Paris / VIIIe," with two red stamps showing the Rouen Cathedral. Christian de la Maziere (1922-2006) was a journalist and member of the Charlemagne Division of the Waffen SS, and was featured in Marcel Ophuls' 1969 documentary "The Sorrow and the Pity," discussing his role in WWII. He also worked for the fascist newspaper "Le Pays Libre" earlier, and in 1974 he wrote "The Captive Dreamer." His involvement at Vichy and the Waffen SS was pardoned before his career in press and film relations, and he garnered brief postwar celebrity. Christian Robier (b. 1936) was a designer and cosmetologist, notably for L'Oreal, and supplies the watercolor illustration here. The brush was not in production long, nor the "Makeur" imprint, but is an early example of cosmetics aids that utilize different attachments, similar to electric trimmer kits today. The Salons de l'Orangiere is just as mysterious, but seems to have operated as a rental hall as of 2015. 9.75 x 13 inches, folded once vertically, textured stock similar to watercolor paper.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Archive of correspondence and film ephemera from representatives at Cinedis and UniFrance Films regarding Christian de la Maziere, briefly the impresario of press relations (and former Waffen-SS soldier) at Cinedis, detailing his participation at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival and at a few Referendum Cinematographique festivals in Vichy. Represented in the archive are 27 leaves, several being checklists detailing in manuscript ink and pencil the names of various film stars and their corresponding hotel stays during the 1959 Cannes festival, notably the Carlton Hotel (several leaves of the hotel's stationery), the Martinez, the Montfleury, and the Majestic. On Cinedis parchment, Maziere is stated as the presenter of Renato Castellanis' women's prison exploitation film, .".and the Wild, Wild Women" ('L'Enfer dans la ville"), and on Francinex parchment (Italian language) as presenting the same film in lieu of Georges Cravenne, a head official at Cinedis. Also included are several carbon typescript leaves of correspondence between A. Bailly, general secretary at the Referendum Cinematographique, and de la Maziere, regarding his participation in the 1957 festival and the showing of Jean Boyer's "Senechal the Magnificent," as well as participation in the 1955 and 1959 festivals. An original program for the 1957 festival, and parking passes for the 1959 festival, are also present. Christian de la Maziere (1922-2006) was a journalist and member of the Charlemagne Division of the Waffen SS, and was featured in Marcel Ophuls 1969 documentary "The Sorrow and the Pity," discussing his role in WWII. He also worked for the fascist newspaper "Le Pays Libre" before joining Charlemagne, and in 1974 he wrote "The Captive Dreamer." His involvement at Vichy and the Waffen SS was pardoned before his career in press and film relations, and he apparently garnered some postwar celebrity. Items range in size, the largest being 8.25 x 10.5 inches, the smallest being 5 x 7.5 inches (hotel stationery). Most folded horizontally for postal purposes. Very Good plus overall. Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Archive of correspondence, gift lists, and journalist lists from representatives at Cinedis, notably Christian de la Maziere, briefly the impresario of press relations (and former Waffen-SS soldier), and Maryse Martres (Martin), who managed much of the company's press and advertising responsibilities. Text in French. Represented in the archive are more than 50 leaves and an advertising catalog, including several checklists detailing the names of various associates who have contributed in some way to Cinedis, and a few notes of correspondence thanking de la Maziere and Martres for gifts received. Dates noted for gift lists include 1957-1958, 1958-1959, and 1959-1960, many with annotations in manuscript ink noting addresses, and some of the lists note in manuscript ink gift ideas for each recipient, being cravate (ties), bloc notes (note pads), montre (watch), crayon Balmain (pencils), echarpe (scarf), and other items. Regarding the budget for these gifts, several leaves detailing item costs are included, on Cinedis parchment, a few being requests from Martres for hard liquor (perhaps for the regular Christmas parties put on by Cinedis for its many patrons and employees). Martres was a prolific French actress who was later involved in press relations in France, worked for Cinedis, the notable film agency, and managed much of the company's press and advertising responsibilities. Present in the collection are several checklists on Cinedis parchment, noting members of the agency and their children, and ideas for toy gifts for each child. Martres was in charge, no doubt, of the Christmas gift giving at Cinedis as well. Several negative film strips from a holiday party are also included. Items range in size, the largest being 8.25 x 10.5 inches, the smallest being 3 x 7 inches (hotel stationery). Housed in gray paper folder, dated 1957-1960 in manuscript ink. Very Good plus overall. Complete details available upon request.

Dutton, USA, 1974, hardback, 1st/1st, VG+ book in a NF jacket, amazing publication error by Dutton, book jacket is the original American translation of the classic ' The Captive Dreamer' and the book itself is ' The Captive Dreamer' (red boards with black print on spine) while the actual book inside is Herbert Kohl' s ' Half the House' a highly sought after book in and of itself. These two collectible books were both published by Dutton in 1974 and somehow Dutton got the wrong bookplates and jackets on the wrong novel. This is a significant collectors item and I cannot find mention of this anywhere. Dutton claims they do not go back that far in regard to misprints. If you are looking for a real conversation piece this is it. 1ST PRINTING.
