Condition: Very Good +. Printed and handwritten document (18 x 32 cm.), with engraved state seal. Gov. Duncan McArthur commissions John Bethel as a justice of the peace of Athens Township, Harrison County, Ohio, for three years on Sept. 14, 1832. Signed on the front by Gov. Duncan McArthur and Secretary of State M. H. Kirby, and on the back by Justice of the Peace William L. Robison. On the back is also the resignation of John Bethel from the office of justice of the peace on Aug. 16, 1833, signed by him. Duncan McArthur (1772-1839) fought in the War of 1812 and served in the Ohio House of Representatives before representing the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served as Ohio governor from 1830 to 1832. Moses H. Kirby (1798-1889) served in the Ohio House of Representatives before serving as Ohio secretary of state from 1831 to 1834. He served in the Ohio Senate from 1880 to 1884. In Very Good+ Condition: lightly foxed and ink-stained.
