Condition: Good. 1969 Writers Workshop (Kolkata [Calcutta], India), 5 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches tall green Indian handloom cloth hardbound, decorative embroidered fore edge to front board, 120 pp. Slight warp to front board. Mild to moderate edgewear to covers, especially at spine caps and tips. Otherwise, apart from a couple of creased page tips and very slight age toning, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked. Remnants of worn and torn publisher's printed paper wraparound 'belly band' laid in, with notes about the volume. Note that this is the cloth hardbound edition, not to be confused with the less expensive (and more common) cloth-covered 'popular flexibound edition' also issued by Writers Workshop. ~SP32~ David McCutchion (1930 - 1972) was an English-born academic, and a pioneer in a number of original strands of scholarship in Indian studies before his early death at age 41. Popularly known as 'Davidbabu,' in his short life he made a major contribution to the study of Hindu terracotta and brick temples of Bengal and was also one of the first scholars to write a study of the emerging field of Indian writing in English. Writers Workshop is a Calcutta, India based literary publisher founded by the poet-professor Purushottama Lal (1929-2010) in 1958. Over the next few decades it published many new authors of post-independence urban literature. Many of these authors later became important literary figures.
