Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 74 pages; In Stephanie McKenzie's second collection, grace wanders through snowdrifts and late nights and finds its way to Northern Ireland, Newfoundland, and the United States. In these poems, grace feels a particular affinity with Van Gogh, with Sylvia Plath, with women who can no longer speak for themselves. We learn that grace must wander even with the lonely sight of crows.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. "In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Canada witnessed an explosion in the production of literary works by Aboriginal writers, a development that some critics have called the Native Renaissance. In "Before the Country", Stephanie McKenzie explores the extent to which this growing body of literature influenced non-Native Canadian writers and has been fundamental in shaping our search for a national mythology. In the context of Northrop Frye's theories of myth, and in light of the attempts of social critics and early anthologists to define Canada and Canadian literature, McKenzie discusses the ways in which our decidedly fractured sense of literary nationalism has set indigenous culture apart from the mainstream. She examines anew the aesthetics of Native Literature and, in a style that is creative as much as it is scholarly, McKenzie incorporates the principles of storytelling into the unfolding of her argument. This strategy not only enlivens her narrative, but also underscores the need for new theoretical strategies in the criticism of Aboriginal literatures. "Before the Country" invites us to engage in one such endeavour." (Blackwell). Book.

First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. First Edition. First edition. An exceptional copy. 2003 Trade Paperback. xiv, 339 pp. Produced under the auspices of the Ireland Newfoundland Partnership, The Backyards of Heaven represents the most significant collaborative poetry project in Ireland within the last 25 years and it is the most comprehensive representation of diverse poets from Newfoundland and Labrador in the province?s literary history. The anthology contains 225 poems (in English, Irish, and French, with translations of Inuit and Mi?kmaq), which are presented in four sections: ?Heroes of Spring,? ?Oceans and Ships,? ?Snowstorm: The Survivors,? and ?Helios Brings Morning to Corner Brook.? The works are contributed by 58 poets from Newfoundland and Labrador and 106 poets from Ireland. Among the Canadian contributors are Nick Avis, Johnny Burton, Boyd Chubbs, Kerri Cull, Michael Crummey, Mary Dalton, Rosalie Elliott, Adrian Fowler, Matthew Hollett, Philip Igloliorti, Susan Ingersoll, Randall Maggs, Carmelita McGrath, John Steffler, Nellie Strowbridge, Goh Poh Seng, Agnes Walsh, Des Walsh, and the late Al Pittman (to whom the book is codedicated, along with Sean Dunne). Irish contributors include Eavan Boland, Ciaran Carson, Se?n Dunne, Seamus Heaney, Rita Kelly, Michael Longley, Derek Mahon, Paul Muldoon, Nuala N? Dhomhnaill, Séan ? Tuama, and Eithne Strong. Although the poets of these two cultures are separated by an ocean, the poems reveal the shared mentality borne out of awesome landscapes, rough seas, distinct dialects, and rich oral and poetic traditions. These common links are further underlined by the fact that the poems are grouped by sentiments and themes, rather than nationality.
