Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original color photograph, hand-colored. 4to. (26 x 20 cm). A portrait. Signed and inscribed as 'To my dear uncle and mother, Fatma Sultana, New York, August 1940'. Sabia Sultan was born on 2 April 1894 in her father's palace in Ortaköy. Her mother was Nazikeda Kad?n, daughter of Hasan Marshan and Fatma Horecan Aredba. She was the third daughter born to her father and mother. She had two sisters, Fenire Sultan, six years elder than her, and Ulviye Sultan, one year elder than her. When her father asecended the throne in 1918, Sabiha was still unmarried, but had several admirers. Those who knew her always said that she was not like the other women of the Ottoman family. "Sabiha Sultan was different", said the Turkish poet Yahya Kemal. Her first suiter is thought to be Rauf Orbay. He was followed by Mahmud Kemal Pasha. Another was Fuad Bey of the Babanzade clan. Captain Safvet Ar?kan, Lieutinant Suphi Bey from Damascus were other suitors, but none of them were accepted. Her betrothal to Ahmad Shah Qajar, the last ruling member of the Qajar dynasty and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was forfeited in favor of her second cousin Sehzade Ömer Faruk thus missing her chance of becoming the first "First Lady" of the nascent Turkish Republic. Sabiha and Sehzade Ömer Faruk, the son of Abdulmejid II, the last Caliph of the Ottoman Caliphate and ?ehsuvar Han?m, were in love with each other. When Abdulmejid asked Sabiha's hand in marriage for his son, Mehmed flatly refused as there was no such thing as a marriage between cousins. Sehsuvar Han?m, the prince's mother called on Nazikeda, and succeeded in convincing her. The marriage took place on 5 December 1919, in the pavilion of the sacred relics, Topkapi Palace. The marriage was performed by Seyhülislam Hayrizade Ibrahim Efendi. Sabiha Sultan's deputy was Baskatip Ali Fuad Bey, and Ömer Faruk's deputy was Ömer Yaver Pasha. The wedding reception took place four months later on 29 April 1920 at the Yildiz Palace. The couple were given the Nisantasi Palace as their residence. Fatma Neslisah Osmanoglu was a granddaughter of the last Ottoman Caliph Abdulmejid II and his first wife, Sehsuvar Hanim and granddaughter of the last Ottoman Sultan Mehmed VI and his first wife, Nazikeda Kadin. She was the daughter of Sehzade Ömer Faruk (1898-1969/1971) and his first wife and cousin Sabiha Sultan (1894-1971). Extremely rare. Signed by Author(s).

Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original manuscript paper. 40x28 cm. In Ottoman script. 2 p. Mehmed Emin Rauf Pasha was an Ottoman industrialist and statesman, who was Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire twice under Mahmud II (reign 1808?1839) and three times under Abdülmecit I (reign 1839?1861) during the Tanzimat period of reformation. He was one of the most prominent figures in funding the Crimean War. According to Shaw and Shaw, Mehmed Emin Rauf Pasha and his predecessor, Mustafa Resit Pasha, "acted mainly as mediators" for Mahmud II, "attempting to balance conflicting interests while participating in the factional activities and disputes endemic in Ottoman governmental life.". Buyuruldu (or Buyrultu, Buyurildi, Buyurdu etc.) is the order of an Ottoman grand vizier, vizier, beglerbegi , defterdâr , or other high officials to a subordinate. The term is derived from the word 'buyuruldi', it has been ordered, in which the order usually ends and which gradually developed into a conventional sign. Buyuruldus are of two main types: a) decisions written in the margin (der kenâr) of an incoming petition or report, often ordering that a fermân (firman) (or berât , etc.) be issued to a certain effect. (Brill, Encyclopedia of Islam). "Menzils" were early post organizations in the Ottoman Empire before the Reform period. In the Ottoman Empire, every 35 kilometers - the distance one could travel in a day - on the main roads, there were buildings called "menzil" or "menzilhane" (destination, post station). Surrounded by walls, these yards had a hostelry, barn, market, bath, and restaurant. Hosted at the complex for free, travelers shopped, took baths and fed their animals, and continued their journeys the following day. At the complex, officials - registered and paid by the state - served the guests. Within time, menzils turned into bazaars where locals sold their products. Then, villages and towns started to pop up around them. Commodities needed by the army for expeditions were preserved at menzils and soldiers were accommodated at these facilities if needed during expeditions. Mailmen operating between two faraway destinations changed their horses with those waiting at menzils and went on their route without losing time. (Source: Ekrem Bugra Ekinci). It's written on paper with 'ahar'. Used black ink only. It includes approx. 63 lines on front and verso of the paper and two buyuruldus. Different calligraphic "riq'a" styles by different bureaucrats and Grand Vizier and owner of a petition (Bende, Osman). Grand vizier's handwriting is in 'diwanî' script. An extremely rare autograph manuscript is a good example of the Ottoman state organization in the early 19th century.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original wrappers. Demy 8vo. (21,5x13 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 33 p. Occasional foxing and fading on pages. Otherwise, a very good copy. Extremely rare first edition in book form, of this first and celebrated legal amendment in which Muslim women, along with other communities living in the Ottoman Empire, benefited from further steps that restricted polygamy and granted the right to divorce. It was published by Takvim-i Vekâyi [i.e., Calendar of Events] Printing House which was the printing house of the first official newspaper in the Ottoman Empire. Under the Young Turks? rule after the Second Constitutional Regime, women gained the right to study at universities, and to work as civil servants in government offices and as workers in factories. With the Ottoman Law of Family Rights, Muslim women, among other congregations, benefited from further steps that restricted polygamy and recognized the right to divorce. This was a first not only in Turkey but also in the Islamic world. (Source: On Maddede Türkiyede Kadin Hareketi, Sirin Tekeli (Bianet online)). The 1917 promulgation of new Ottoman family law is recognized as a landmark moment in the history of Islamic law by scholars of women and gender in the Middle East. This world?s first official Muslim family law code, the Ottoman Law of Family Rights (Hukuk-i Aile Kararnamesi, hereafter OLFR) of 1917, would have an important impact beyond the empire, as it became the model for several states? family codes in the Middle East. The law is situated in its wartime political context and the geopolitical milieu of larger Europe to demonstrate that, although short-lived, the 1917 family law was a centrepiece of the wartime struggle to define extraterritorial rights of the Ottoman Empire, the Great Powers, and their protégés within the empire.
